New Avengers: Infinity War set images offer an alternate look at Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) fighting off Thanos’ goons, Ebony Maw and Cull Obsidian, in New York. It’s been more than two years since the Joe and Anthony Russo-directed flick hit theaters. However, the film remains as relevant as ever despite the Infinity Saga wrapping up, thanks to multiple appearances of the Infinity Stones and the Mad Titan in various MCU Phase 4 projects.

Marvel Studios initially wanted Infinity War to be the first half of a two-part finale. However, as they developed its story, the Russos separated it from Avengers: Endgame, since the films were considered two complete narratives. Despite that, the film did set up most of what went down in its sequel. It not only introduced Thanos, but also established his genocidal motivations. Infinity War also brought together different pockets of the wider universe, with the Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy, and all other heroes coming together to face a common enemy. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough. In the end, they still lost, resulting in the decimation of half of life in the universe.

Infinity War featured a lot of action set pieces, and now the Instagram account On Set. Unseen has revealed a string of images from the time Marvel Studios was filming the project’s New York battle. The shots provide a fresh look at Downey battling against a stunt person who is standing in for one of the villains; likely Cull Obsidian given the tall pole that is visible on the costume. In another snap, Downey (or, more likely, his stunt double) is seen half-suited up in Iron Man’s helmet and chest plate. Check out the behind-the-scenes photos below:

The New York battle was Infinity War’s first real action scene. Granted that Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) battled Thanos beforehand, it was more of a hand-to-hand tussle rather than an actual full-blown fight sequence. It set the stage up for the film’s third act, with Iron Man being eventually joined by Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Spider-Man (Tom Holland) journeying to space in the hopes of protecting the Time Stone. Ultimately, this kept the heroes separated from the Wakanda battle, where Earth’s last stand took place.

Seeing these images, it’s difficult to imagine that it has been almost three years since Avengers: Infinity War debuted. Marvel Studios did a great job keeping plot details of the movie tightly under wraps, with its marketing carefully crafted not to give anything away, particularly its final and biggest twist. For now, the MCU is shying away from ensemble projects, opting for smaller team-ups instead. That being said, it’s safe to say that an Avengers 5 film is inevitable, and that the ensuing action sequences will be just as impressive as those in the epic Infinity Saga.
