Infinity War Sequels Dont Guarantee Characters Will Be Resurrected

Avengers: Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo point out that just because some fallen characters have confirmed sequels on the docket, that doesn’t necessarily mean that they’ll be resurrected in Avengers 4. The 19th film installment of the MCU saw the official introduction of Mad Titan Thanos as he battled Earth’s Mightiest Heroes for the Infinity Stones. In the end, despite a gallant effort from the Avengers and their newfound allies, the intergalactic villain succeeded – enacting the snap that wiped out half of the universe. That includes several Marvel heroes such as most of the Guardians of the Galaxy, Black Panther, Bucky, Doctor Strange, and Spider-Man.

While fans held on to the notion that most of the fallen heroes are confirmed for their respective sequels past Avengers 4 as an insurance that they’ll be brought back, the Russo brothers cautioned that it’s not going to be the case for some of them. A play in timeline may actually allow for the sequels to feature currently dead characters without needing to resurrect some of them.

Speaking with Huffington Post, Joe and Anthony cast doubts on people’s perception that a confirmed Marvel standalone sequel guarantees the resurrection of some of the dusted characters in Infinity War. “Here’s the thing, I think it’s important to remember anything is possible in the MCU [Marvel Cinematic Universe],” Anthony said. “Just because there’s a sequel on the books doesn’t mean … people become accustomed to time moving linearly in the MCU. That doesn’t necessarily have to be the case. There’s a lot of very inventive ways of where the story can go from here.”

Continuing, the Joe backed up his brother’s point by citing the time-in-between Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 2 and Avengers 3 saying “that’s a long time, and a lot of ‘Guardians’ stories to tell. Again, as Anthony said, don’t expect everything to move forward in a linear fashion in the Marvel universe.” Whether or not that’s a clue about the said characters he was previously talking about remains to be seen. Then again, how unmomentous and unconnected will Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (or any sequel set in that gap in time for that matter) for it to not be addressed in Infinity War?

Further, the specific explanation doesn’t necessarily apply to Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 which has long been confirmed to take place after the events of Avengers 4. So it’s safe to say that Tom Holland’s Peter will be one of the returning characters, alongside Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange because according to the Ancient One, no one can peer through the future past his/her own life. The fact that he’s seen the millions of outcome from the bout against Thanos means that he’ll live past this current predicament.

Writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely have been adamant that the Avengers: Infinity War deaths are real, and that fans need to accept that. However, the Russos’ latest comments also inadvertently confirm that resurrections are indeed going to take place in next year’s Phase 3 capper. Of course, the manner in which this would go down is still a mystery and one of the biggest questions coming into Avengers 4. But with the directors’ aforementioned quotes, fans can expect some of the characters coming back one way or another,

Accidental movie fan who is perpetually curious, Ana rekindled her love for writing several years back and married it with everything pop culture. The result is a passionate young writer who could ramble (and of course, pen) about films and series multiple hours a day. She has a soft spot for The Lion King, old songs, and home design; is currently obsessed with old sitcoms (The Golden Girls!); and won’t dare watch any horror films although she’s (ironically) dying to see one. Though a bit late to the party and was an actual Force non-believer, she now finds the Star Wars franchise quite fascinating (fun fact: it was a crazy Jar Jar Binks/Sith theory that drew her in).
