Inside Out: Ranking The Main Characters By Their Intelligence

Inside Out was one of Pixar’s finest films. The characters may mostly be emotions but plenty of them are actually really smart.

Disney’s Inside Out proved to be one of Pixar’s greatest ever movies and was one that really connected with both younger and older audiences due to the emotions that were brought up. Even though it is targeted at a very young audience, as Pixar is notorious for, it had plenty of adult themes.

A big reason for that is how intelligent the characters are. While they might provide lots of vibrancy and be bright colored for the younger viewers, the things they say and do showcase incredible brains. This list will rank the characters from Inside Out, purely based on their intelligence.

10 Bing Bong

Bing Bong might be the character that loves to play and is someone who brings a lot of joy to the movie, but he is also the least intelligent character as well. While Bing Bong has got a great knowledge of Riley’s imagination and certainly knows his way around, the fact is he is just an imaginary friend that Riley thought up when she was young.

Due to that, Bing Bong never really got much development from Riley’s brain and he wasn’t developed to be a smart character. His sole existence is to provide cheer and fun, and Bing Bong certainly does that, but he doesn’t bring much in terms of intelligence.

9 Jordan

Jordan is only briefly shown throughout Inside Out, although his character proved to be popular, which led to him getting a short film focused around him with Riley’s First Date? He ends up being Riley’s love interest as the two of them clearly have a crush on each other.

They have a fun and slightly awkward scene in the film together where Jordan isn’t exactly shown as a bright individual. Perhaps it is because he is simply stuck for words, but Jordan stands looking shocked, while his emotions showcase he isn’t really processing the information.

8 Riley

Riley is technically the main character of the entire film as everything is focused on her and the emotions that she goes through by having to relocate. However, her story is mainly told through the emotions inside of her head, and they certainly dictate her overall intelligence.

While she shows great moments and examples of being a very bright young girl, there are also moments where she is just a child and her overall brains don’t reflect that, which is why she doesn’t rank too highly.

7 Anger

The first of the five major emotions that are shown throughout Inside Out is Anger, who is certainly a wise character and is someone who isn’t afraid of making his opinion known, which is always a good thing. However, he struggles to control his own emotion and that leads to making some impulse decisions.

He is smart in some respects, as he is able to really analyze situations and make decisions on what he likes and dislikes. However, he doesn’t always rationalize situations in the same way as other characters, which ultimately hurts him.

6 Disgust

Next up is Disgust, who is the least showcased of the five emotions, but is also very opinionated on many topics. She is able to keep her emotions in check better than Anger, but she doesn’t quite have the same intelligence as the other three emotions, who all offer a specific purpose that is very important to Riley.

Disgust is a bit of a chatterbox and she proves her intelligence by constantly trying to come up with different ideas throughout the film. She’s a brilliant character and brings a lot of fun and joy to things, but she isn’t quite as intelligent as others.

5 Fear

Fear is constantly worrying and stressing about the safety of Riley and certain situations that she is put in, which actually helps make him an intelligent character. While Fear is a little too careful at times, the fact that he looks at everything in the detail that he does showcases he is a very smart character.

There is no situation he hasn’t thought about, including multiple possibilities for what could happen. The attention to the smaller details is something that might get overlooked in the grand scheme of the movie, but it does make him incredibly smart.

4 Dad

While he isn’t showcased too heavily throughout the film, there is no doubt that Riley’s father is one of the smartest characters. The main reason for this is that he’s an adult. It’s clear that he is very close to his daughter and tries his best to make her as happy as possible.

However, he is also shown to be quite clumsy at times and when his own emotions are highlighted, it is obvious that Riley’s father isn’t always fully focusing on the things that are going on around him.

3 Sadness

While she might only be an emotion inside Riley’s head, Sadness is one of the lead characters within Inside Out. She is very sensitive and incredibly emotional, bringing plenty of teary moments to Riley’s life, but that doesn’t mean that she’s not smart.

Sadness might not have read up on all of the books like other emotions or have the stereotypical style of intelligence, but she understands things from an emotional level. She showcases her intelligence by being someone who can really help on a personal level, which is due to her intelligence as a character.

2 Joy

Much like Sadness, Joy is one of Inside Out’s real main characters and she is the complete contrast to Sadness. They work perfectly as a team because they fill in the other’s flaws. Joey can’t understand things not being all about happiness, and not being able to see that is a weakness of hers.

However, she does show an amazing understanding of what Riley needs and seems to act as the leader of the other emotions throughout the film. It is Joy who shows her bravery in trying to fix everything, and throughout the movie she proves that she is willing to adapt, learn, and improve.

1 Mom

Much like Riley’s father, her mom is someone who has to be considered to be more intelligent simply because she is older. The emotions inside of a person’s head grow with the person due to their experiences, and therefore due to being older, Riley’s mom has developed to be a smarter individual.

She is always showcased doing her very best and trying to make things work, and she is empathetic towards her daughter, trying to help her out. Even when her personal emotions are shown, they all seem to be smart, in comparison to Riley’s father who spends time watching sport inside his own head.
