Insidious 4 Trailer Arriving Soon; New Title Possibly Revealed

The trailer for Insidious: Chapter 4 is expected to drop very shortly, having just been officially rated, and may also have a new title to boot. One of the foremost franchises in the new generation of jump scare-heavy horror movies, Insidious tells the story of parapsychologist Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye) and her experiences with The Further, an otherworldly plane for ghosts and other supernatural beings that can be accessed via astral projection. As inhabitants of The Further torment the living, Elise puts her own life on the line in order to help those being plagued or possessed by these pesky poltergeists.

While Insidious: Chapter 2 acted as a direct sequel to the original, Chapter 3 was an Elise-centric prequel that focused on the earlier adventures of the investigator and her two bumbling sidekicks Specs (Leigh Whannell) and Tucker (Angus Sampson). Insidious 3 ended with Elise discovering an entity had begun haunting her personally and this cliffhanger acts as a starting point for the fourth outing. Shaye, Whannell and Sampson are all reprising their roles, with Adam Robitel calling the shots behind the camera. Leigh Whannell has also written the script.

The BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) have now announced that the trailer has been officially rated, suggesting that the clip’s release is imminent. The trailer clocks in at 61 seconds and was passed by the board uncut, most likely in time to be shown alongside IT. Somewhat more significantly, the trailer is listed under the title Insidious: The Last Key, suggesting that the franchise’s fourth installment will break away from the traditional Chapter titles and employ a subtitle for the first time.

Although The Last Key will almost certainly be Insidious 4’s official title in the U.K., it’s worth noting that the name is taken from the British ratings board and therefore it’s possible that there will be a different title for the U.S. and worldwide releases. Nevertheless, the titular “last key” will surely prove pivotal to the plot of Insidious 4, particularly when you consider that this installment focuses on Elise’s own haunting and will likely be a very personal story as a result. [UPDATE: The Last Key subtitle has also been used in marketing promoting the Insidious-themed maze as part of Universal Studios Hollywood’s Halloween Horror Nights this year, further suggesting that this could be the film’s U.S. title.]

The Insidious franchise has proved highly lucrative thus far but every movie series has a point of expiry and there’s an argument to be made that Insidious: The Last Key is that very point. Given that moviegoers have already seen both an Insidious sequel and prequel, the fact that the fourth movie is essentially a sequel-to-the-prequel may be a stretch too far for some, as Blumhouse Productions continue their attempts to avoid the issue of Elise being killed off in the first film.

Craig first began contributing to Screen Rant in 2016, several years after graduating college, and has been ranting ever since, mostly to himself in a darkened room. Having previously written for various sports and music outlets, Craig’s interest soon turned to TV and film, where a steady upbringing of science fiction and comic books finally came into its own. Craig has previously been published on sites such as Den of Geek, and after many coffee-drenched hours hunched over a laptop, part-time evening work eventually turned into a full-time career covering everything from the zombie apocalypse to the Starship Enterprise via the TARDIS. Since joining the Screen Rant fold, Craig has been involved in breaking news stories and mildly controversial ranking lists, but now works predominantly as a features writer. Jim Carrey is Craig’s top acting pick and favorite topics include superheroes, anime and the unrecognized genius of the High School Musical trilogy.
