Instagram Just Ripped Off TikTok… Again
Instagram Reels now lets users pick between two voice options for its new Text-to-Speech feature, but TikTok offers a wider selection to choose from.

Instagram has introduced voice effects and text-to-speech for Reels, replicating features that are already available on TikTok. Instagram copied Stories from Snapchat some time ago, and to great success. Its next target for taking a generous a dose of inspiration from was the short-video phenomenon TikTok. Instagram created Reels in 2020 as its own version of TikTok and in a bid to capitalize on the short-video craze.
Soon after launch, Instagram increased the permissible length of videos from 15 to 60 seconds, and roughly at the same time that TikTok increased its video length limit to three minutes. Since TikTok’s shopping features were starting to prove popular, Instagram also made a few heavy UI tweaks to put the Shop tab front and center alongside the Reels button in the navigation bar. Needless to say, the two services are becoming more alike than different.
Instagram has now added a couple of features to Reels — voice effects, and text-to-speech — both of which are fairly popular on TikTok from entertainment and accessibility standpoints. Starting with text-to-speech, it can be accessed from the text tool that appears when users fire up the Reels camera. As the name suggests, text-to-speech will allow users to add text or a caption to their videos that is then read out in a choice of two voices. The steps are quite simple — Open the Reels camera, record/upload a video, tap on the Text tool and then type the message. Once the text is done, a bubble with a three-dot icon appears at the bottom. Tapping this reveals the new ‘Text-to-Speech” option that subsequently asks users to choose between a male and female voice.
Similar Features, But Not Quite The Same
The implementation of text-to-speech is quite limited for Instagram with just two voice options to choose from. TikTok, on the other hand, offers as many as five standard voices. Standard, because the company has recently partnered with a few entertainment franchises to also offer custom voices, including Ghostface from the Scream movies. The latest example of this strategy is TikTok’s partnership with Disney, which adds voices like Rocket Raccoon from Guardians of the Galaxy, Chewbacca and C-3PO from Star Wars, and Stitch from Lilo and Stitch. If past history is any indication, Instagram might soon expand its own catalog of text-to-speech voices with similar collaborations.

The second new feature arriving on Instagram Reels is voice effects, and the process of adding these is also pretty straightforward. After users have recorded a Reels video, they need to tap on the music note icon at the top to open the Audio Controls window at the bottom. In the Audio Controls menu, tap on the Voice Effects option and choose a voice. Instagram had made five voice effects available — a thick voice appropriately called Giant, a funny Helium version that sounds as if the speaker inhaled the noble gas, a reverberating Announcer effect, a pretty disturbing Robot voice, and finally, the Vocalist.
