Instagrams New Biometric Verification Is Easily Fooled By A Barbie Doll

Instagram launched a new biometric verification scan to help prevent spammers and bots from abusing the system, but when put to the test, a Barbie doll was able to pass and get verified as an actual human. Bots have been running rampant on Instagram for years, quickly following a large number of accounts, posting comments and sending direct messages. The problem isn’t unique to Instagram, but it stands out as particularly annoying because it is one of the largest social networks.

Instagram has been dealing with a rapidly changing environment for many years, presenting a unique approach to social media with its photos-first approach when it launched in 2010. It started with low-resolution images with a width of only 640 pixels. The system was fast and light even at the much lower internet speeds available at that time. Facebook acquired Instagram in 2012 and initially made few changes, but as technology evolved, Instagram increased photo size limits, added the video options and began showing its first advertisements.

The old story is that money corrupts, and Instagram has become a source of income for many creators. Unfortunately, spammers must also be earning a good wage on Instagram since there are plenty of fake accounts that follow, like, comment and direct message just about everyone as they attempt to promote, sell or scam real users. Instagram, of course, tries to police this activity but keeping up with automated attacks is hard work. The platform recently implemented a biometric verification process to help slow the flood of bots, but the test seems a bit too simplistic. Spotted by XDA Developers, a recent YouTube video from Alexander Chalkidis demonstrated how a barbie doll can easily fool the verification process.

Instagram Verification Problems

Chalkidis did the same test with a Ken doll and got verified for the same account. This is possible because Instagram doesn’t save the biometric data, meaning any doll that looks vaguely human might work for any future verification requests. There’s no need to use the same Barbie to clear a bot for another round of spamming. Since the instructions specify turning the head in various directions, at least a two-dimensional photograph won’t fool the verification system.

This isn’t the first time Instagram has tried biometric verification of a user’s humanity. The requirement started appearing over a year ago, and complaints about not being able to upload the required selfie video have surfaced as well. So perhaps Instagram is swinging from a system that is too hard to one that is too easy. Whatever the case might be, it seems like more refinement is needed to solve the complex problem of spam and bots on Instagram.
