Instagrams New Link Stickers Explained

In a somewhat surprising change, Instagram is testing the removal of the swipe-up linking feature in favor of link-laden stickers. The swipe-up allows Instagram users to link a webpage to their Instagram Story, with the audience simply having to make an upward motion on the screen to visit the external website. Stickers give Instagram creators the opportunity to add interactive features to their Story, with users just having to tap their screens to get started.

Several recent Instagram updates have been centered around helping users stay safe on the platform, including automatically setting Instagram accounts on Private for users under 16. Users also now have the option to control what sort of content they view on the app with the Sensitive Content Control feature. Instagram Reels also received an update last month, adding a 60-second option to the pre-existing 15- and 30-second Reels clips. And earlier this summer, users received a useful new link between Twitter and Instagram by allowing iPhone users to link a Tweet directly to their Instagram Story.

The swipe-up links will begin to disappear in favor of stickers starting on August 30th, as reported by The Verge. Users will just be able to tap on the link sticker to go to a website rather than swiping up. According to the report, the change is only rolling out to users who can use the swipe-up feature to begin with, which apparently is reserved for verified users or those who have a minimum of 10,000 followers. An Instagram spokesperson shared that rolling out the update to certain users first will help the social media app determine if this change is the right move —` if it seems like a good fit, then it looks like more users might gain access to the link stickers. Instagram first started testing the waters with this feature back in June, including users who weren’t eligible for the swipe-up feature.

How To Add A Sticker To Your Instagram Story

The Stickers that are already available to everyone are quite easy to apply, and can even be used to add automatic captions to an Instagram Story. To get started, just create an Instagram Story, then tap on the square smiley-face Stickers button at the top of the screen, located next to the music note. From there, just choose the sticker labeled “Captions” and captions will be added to the Story. Users can also drag the generated captions around to place them anywhere in the video.

Users can also tag their location in their Story with a Sticker. Tap on the Stickers button, and choose the “Locations” to select a number of nearby locations. People who view the story can tap on the Locations sticker to view other users who have also used that location recently. And to add a song to an Instagram Story, tap on the Music sticker and search for the song, or choose one from the generated list. From there, users can choose between generated captions or album art, what portion of the clip plays, and how long the clip itself is.
