Intel May Be Already Working On Its 4th AllNew Arc GPU Leak Suggests

Leaks relating to Intel’s upcoming Arc Alchemist desktop graphics cards are coming thick and fast, with the latest seemingly confirming earlier rumors that the company is prepping a fourth model in the lineup. Intel is expected to launch its first discreet desktop graphics cards next year to compete with the likes of NVIDIA and AMD. Leading up to the launch, the company last week officially announced the specs of the first card, confirming that the flagship model will have a total of 512 Execution Units, including 32 Xe Cores, each of which will have 16 Vector Engines and 16 Matrix Engines.

The flagship DG-512EU also broke cover a few days back when a tech YouTuber seemingly leaked real-life images of Intel’s upcoming flagship graphics card. The front view of the card shows off the dual-fan design with Intel’s branding on each fan, while the rear-view suggests that it will have a different PCB layout to the engineering samples that leaked earlier this year. The 512EU is believed to be the flagship model in the lineup that will also include the entry-level DG2-128EU.

The latest information on the fourth model in Intel’s Arc Alchemist lineup comes from Gitlab, where a post describes the company’s GPU pixel processing enhancements. According to the post, the new GPU will be the DG2-448, which will be in addition to the DG2-512, DG2-384 and DG2-128. A quick back-of-the-envelope calculation by Tom’s Hardware suggests that the new model will likely ship with 3,584 cores, although there’s no confirmation about this either officially from Intel or any tipster with a proven record. The other three models in the lineup are expected to have 4,096, 3,072, and 1,024 cores, respectively.

Intel Will Likely Employ Two Die Sizes

The report goes on to state that Intel will likely split its Arc GPU lineup into two dies – a larger one for the flagship and premium SKUs, and a smaller one for the more affordable mainstream and entry-level GPUs. With 3,584 cores, the DG2-448 will most likely be on the highest core-count wafer, although some of the cores will be intentionally disabled. It is similar to Intel’s decision to go with two different die sizes for its Alder Lake CPU lineup, which is expected to maximize the company’s wafer utilization by salvaging as many damaged wafers as possible for the entry-level chips with lower core count.

While earlier reports claimed that the flagship Arc Alchemist card will offer similar performance to that of the RTX 3070, more recent reports seem to suggest that the performance will likely be closer to that of the RTX 3080. It’s not immediately clear as to what that means for the DG2-448, and while online speculation suggests that its performance could be closer to that of the RTX 3070, it might be more readily available that the latter, thanks to the higher yield as a result of the deactivated cores.
