Intels Arc Alchemist GPU Performance Specs Are Impressive

In the lead up to the release of Intel’s much-awaited Arc Alchemist GPU, the company has officially announced the specs of the first card in the lineup, and it looks pretty impressive. Both AMD and NVIDIA have been steadily launching new GPUs despite the crippling chip shortage that has rendered graphics cards almost impossible to buy over the past year. While the former launched its Radeon RX 6600 mid-range graphics card for desktops earlier this month, the latter released its own mid-range offering, the RTX 3060, back in February.

Intel is now set to join the two incumbent GPU-makers with its new Arc Alchemist discreet graphics cards based on the company’s high-performance Xe-HPG architecture. While the Arc brand encompasses graphics hardware, software and services, the Alchemist will be Intel’s first piece of high-end graphics hardware that the company hopes will be able to offer a true alternative to the NVIDIA and AMD products for gamers and enthusiasts.

At its InnovatiON event this week, Intel confirmed that its Arc Alchemist GPU will have 32 Xe Cores, each of which will have 16 Vector Engines and 16 Matrix Engines, which equates to 512 Execution Units overall. While recent benchmarks have suggested otherwise, the official specs suggest that Intel’s upcoming GPU could rival some of the high-end offerings from NVIDIA and AMD, including the RTX 3070 and the RX 6700 XT, both of which were launched earlier this year.

Intel Also Demoed Its XeSS Upscaling Algorithm

Intel also showed off the Alchemist’s XeSS upscaling technology that promises to deliver high-fidelity visuals in supported games. In essence, it is Intel’s answer to NVIDIA’s DLSS and AMD’s FSR real-time image upscaling features. While it’s hard to say how well XeSS compares to the two established technologies, PC Gamer is reporting that the upscaled 4K images on a new game called The Riftbreaker were “clearly much sharper” than standard upscaled images. With upscaling technologies fast becoming the standard in modern games for high-fidelity images, it will be interesting to see how XeSS fares once the Arc Alchemist is launched next year.

Alongside the Arc Alchemist, Intel also announced details about its Alder lake CPUs that will be available for purchase from next month. There will be six processors available right away, including the top-of-the-line Core i9-12900K, which will be the successor to the Core i9-11900K released earlier this year. Unlike its octa-core predecessor, the new CPU is a 16-core beast with a boost frequency of up to 5.2 GHz. Of course, the ‘K’ denotes that the chip will ship with an unlocked multiplier, which means it can be overclocked to run faster than its 3.2GHz stock frequency. Apart from the CPUs and GPUs, Intel also announced the new Z690 chipset with PCIe 4.0 and DDR5 support.
