As we discussed in the latest Screen Rant Underground podcast, 2014 has a pretty eclectic mix of movies set for release this fall. Among the many titles that could prove to be either great or terrible are Christopher Nolan’s upcoming sci-fi wormhole drama Interstellar and Disney’s Into the Woods, an adaptation of the Broadway musical of the same name, which was directed by Rob Marshall (Chicago).

Interstellar stars Matthew McConnaughey and Anne Hathaway as two astronauts who are sent on a mission to find… well, something to help humanity, after Earth suffers a worsening drought with water resources that cannot sustain the population for long. On the other end of the genre spectrum, Into the Woods is a collection of elements from different fairy tales that stars Anna Kendrick as Cinderella, Johnny Depp as the Big Bad Wolf, Meryl Streep as a wicked witch and Chris Pine and Billy Magnussen as a pair of handsome princes.

If you’re planning to see one or both of these movies then you should definitely check out these new posters for Into the Woods and Interstellar. The latter poster comes from the latest issue of Empire and shows McConnaughey’s character exploring the snowy surface of what looks like an alien planet. Meanwhile, the latest poster for Into the Woods shows Streep in her full witch garb.

[UPDATE: Paramount has now released an official version of the Empire poster.]

Into the Woods might look like kid-friendly fairy tale fare – especially with the Disney name attached to it – but the source material goes to some pretty dark places and it will be interesting to see how Marshall brings that to the big screen… and how audiences respond to it. 2014 has been a good year for Disney’s live action fairy tales, with Sleeping Beauty re-imagining Maleficent becoming one of the biggest box office hits of the year so far, and Into the Woods is definitely one of the stronger contenders coming out on Christmas Day.

Interstellar, meanwhile, has been tricky to parse based on the trailers. It looks like the kind of high-minded sci-fi that also characterized one of this year’s disappointments, Transcendence, which was directed by Nolan’s regular cinematographer Wally Pfister. Nolan himself has more experience directing sci-fi movies with grand concepts, however, and moviegoers who enjoyed Inception should definitely give Nolan’s outer space adventure a chance.

Interstellar is out in theaters on November 7th, 2014, followed by Into the Woods on December 25th.
