Interview With the Vampire Show Set At AMC & Will Launch Franchise

AMC will launch a new TV series and franchise based on author Anne Rice’s Interview With the Vampire as well as her Vampire Chronicles and Lives of the Mayfair Witches books. Originally written in 1976, Rice’s Interview With the Vampire was the first in a series of 21 different vampire novels. Back in 1994, Interview with the Vampire was adapted into a feature film that starred Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt and a then 11-year-old Kirsten Dunst.

Though the film found considerable success at the box office, it failed to garner much critical acclaim. This was and is surprising considering that it offered two of the biggest movie stars on the planet, but many fans of the film and of Rice have always maintained that with so many stories available to adapt, the potential for more films has never been fully realized. A second attempt at bringing Rice’s world to life came with 2002’s Queen of the Damned, a loose sequel that failed to offer any of the star power that Interview had. Nonetheless, Rice has continued to add to her extensive count of books in the Vampire Chronicles series, with her most recent, Blood Communion: A Tale of Prince Lestat, arriving in 2018, and her most recent entry in the Lives of the Mayfair Witches series, Blood Canticle, was released in 2003.

Now, at long last, fans of Rice’s work will be getting another opportunity to see some of their favorite installments realized in a new TV series from AMC. According to Deadline, an eight-part series based on Interview With the Vampire is officially on its way, with things kicking off in 2022. Last year, AMC acquired the rights to 18 of Rice’s books, and this acquisition will be used to create a franchise highlighting Rice’s extensive vampire universe. Rolin Jones, who has written for programs such as Weeds, United States of Tara and the critically acclaimed Boardwalk Empire, will create and write the new series.

For those who were big fans of the 1994 film, it might seem as though a TV series can’t surpass what was already done. However, arguably the biggest advantage that this new series has is time. Eight episodes allows for a deeper exploration of Rice’s work, easily surpassing the film’s 2 hour runtime. The trade-off for this of course, is that the series likely won’t have the star power that the film had. But it’s safe to say that most fans will take a deeper exploration of Interview’s story over a return of either Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt. One of the biggest questions on fans’ minds, then, is what this new franchise will look like and how much of each of the 18 novels that AMC has the rights to will be adapted.

And while an Interview With the Vampire TV series is an exciting prospect, the track record for film to TV adaptations isn’t exactly littered with success stories. Over the last handful of years alone, TV adaptations from material such as the Bourne franchise, Scream, Taken and The Dark Crystal have all failed. This isn’t to say that Interview and Rice’s other novels can’t survive on the small screen, but a strong adaptation will be required if AMC has any hope of taking the vampire concept to new heights.
