Invincible Season 2 What To Expect

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Invincible season 1.

The animated superhero show Invincible wrapped up season 1 with a bang and it has already been renewed for not only season 2, but a third installment as well. Invincible has been a success for Amazon, garnering both critical praise and high viewership. These renewals show that Amazon has plenty of confidence in the show and its creators to continue weaving a strong story moving forward.

Invincible follows the story of teenager Mark Grayson (played by Steven Yeun) who, after years of waiting, finally develops superpowers inherited from his father Nolan, an alien who came to Earth and became the world’s most famous superhero Omni-Man (played by J.K. Simmons). Amazon’s Invincible is based on the Image Comics series of the same name, created by Robert Kirkman, creator of The Walking Dead, and artist Cory Walker. The comic is known for blending heightened and silly superhero elements with adult drama and ultraviolence, and the Invincible show aimed to capture that balance, too.

Details are scarce right now about Invincible season 2. Unlike other shows like Amazon’s The Boys, Invincible was not renewed for second season before the first one debuted. The announcement came a day before the explosive finale aired, but little else has been said about it beyond that; however, certain details can be inferred by looking to the comics and what happened after Mark’s devastating fight with Omni-Man.

Invincible Season 2 Renewal

Invincible Season 2 What To Expect

Invincible season 2 and season 3 have both been officially announced by Amazon. After much fan campaigning for Invincible to get a second season while the first was still airing, Amazon showed how much faith they have in Kirkman and his team with their double renewal situation. Invincible is clearly going to be a long-term investment for the streaming service, which is a good thing because fans clearly want more from this world. That is not to mention that season 1 left a lot of storylines open-ended regarding, well, everything, and much of that could be tackled in season 2.

Invincible Season 2 Release Date Info

Invincible Season 2 What To Expect

While Invincible has been renewed, there aren’t any details yet regarding season 2’s release date. It can be speculated that the second season will likely come sometime in the first half of 2022, but considering how long animation can take to produce it might arrive even later. That being said, Kirkman confirmed his team had done some amount of pre-production on the second season even before Amazon gave the official greenlight, so they were able to it the ground running as soon as the renewal was announced. Kirkman and his team spend several years working on season 1, but the turnaround time for season 2 and season 3 will likely be shorter.

Invincible Season 2 Cast

Invincible Season 2 What To Expect

Much of the main cast of Invincible season 1 are likely to return for a second season. This includes Steven Yeun, Sandra Oh (Nora Grayson), Zazie Beetz (Amber Bennett), Gillian Jacobs (Atom Eve), and Zachary Quinto (Robot) as all of their characters play key roles in the comic’s story going forward. Also likely to return are guest actors like Ezra Miller (DA Sinclair), Seth Rogen (Allen the Alien), and Mahershala Ali (Titan), whose character was shown making new alliances at the end of season 1. All of them become bigger parts of the story as the series goes on. J.K. Simmons might not initially appear as Omni-Man in the next installment, as he was last seen flying off into deep space. Readers of the comic know where he’s going, and there’s a good chance that he’ll come back into the story at some point in season 2. Either way, fans haven’t seen the last of him.

Invincible Season 2 Story Details

While there’s no telling for sure yet where Invincible could go in a second season, it can be speculated by looking at the source material. Kirkman himself has also teased that everything in the montage at the end of season 1 was there as a reminder to the audience that everything that happened was important. Therefore, any of these story elements could make it into season 2. Invincible season 1 culminated with the fight between Mark and his father Omni-Man, and season 2 can focus on Mark stepping up as Earth’s main protector. If Invincible follows the arc from the comics, season 2’s main plot elements will involve the Sequids’ plan to take over Earth, Titan growing his crime organization, Allen’s adventures in space, and Mark’s tensions with Cecil’s methods for protecting the Earth. The Sequids will likely be front and center, especially as season 1 ended with them attacking Mars. There’s also the subplot regarding Omni-Man’s return to space and potentially reuniting with the Viltrumites — they still have a planet to conquer, after all, and there are surely consequences for Omni-Man abandoning his mission. Kirkman has also teased the introduction of Angstrom Levy, a villain from the comics who can travel to alternate realities and blames Invincible for what happened to him. There are obviously plenty of storylines left for Invincible season 2 to tackle and season 1 set up several of them enough for the next season to start paying them off.
