Invincible Why OmniMan Doesnt Save Mark

Why Omni-Man doesn’t save Mark Grayson in Invincible season 1’s fifth episode, called “That Actually Hurt.” Ever since obtaining his superpowers, Mark has been training with his father. Most recently, Mark saved the country from an asteroid before it made impact with Earth. Suffice it to say, the new superhero on the block has been taking his new responsibilities pretty seriously while also attempting to balance his schoolwork and personal life. However, Mark went up against a few formidable villains in episode five and there’s a disturbing reason why Omni-Man stayed out of the fight.

In Invincible’s “That Actually Hurt,” Titan tricks Mark to defeat Machine Head, a powerful crime boss with a robot head in place of a human one. However, when he and Titan show up to battle Machine Head, Mark is surprised to learn Machine Head knew they were coming and hired a group of his superpowered henchmen to fight them. Mark — and, later, the new Guardians of the Globe — are outnumbered and outpowered, with Battle Beast delivering a nearly fatal blow to Mark that left him severely injured and near death. Instead of helping his son, however, Omni-Man floated just outside Machine Head’s building, watching the battle briefly before flying away.

Omni-Man has been pushing Mark to train harder as well, constantly ensuring his son knows that being battle-ready is far more important than school, work, and making time for his girlfriend, Amber. Leaving Mark to fight Machine Head’s hired supervillains on his own was essentially Omni-Man’s twisted way of teaching Mark a lesson. The elder Viltrumite showed displeasure when Mark wasn’t focused on his training earlier in the episode and it’s likely he saw this scenario as an opportunity to drill the importance of preparation into his son. It didn’t matter that Omni-Man could’ve defeated the other villains in one fell swoop, the Viltrumite was determined to make sure Mark saw the error of his ways.

What’s more, Invincible already confirmed how sadistic and brutal Omni-Man was after killing the original Guardians of the Globe. He wasn’t about to let his son get off so easy, either. Not stepping in to help Mark is on par with his character’s behavior so far. It furthers the extent of his violent history and captures the spirit of the animated series. It shows the consequences of Mark not heeding his father’s advice. Leaving Mark to fight Battle Beast and Machine Head’s other henchmen also reveals how disturbing Omni-Man’s behavior truly is. If he’s willing to let Mark go it alone and nearly die at the hands of an aggressor, it shows Omni-Man’s nonchalance when it comes to even his loved ones; no one is safe from him.

Omni-Man comes from Viltrum’s warrior society, one that fully prepares their youth in the use of their powers and goals. Unlike Omni-Man, Mark is a caring person who tried to make things right and help Titan. While he was tricked, Mark’s heart was in the right place. Omni-Man saw this and likely wanted to beat the concern and goodness out of his son, believing that would make him stronger and less willing to help others if it involved smaller scale threats. Omni-Man is probably trying to get Mark to understand the bigger picture without having to tell him outright. It’s unclear how Mark’s near-death experience will change him, but Invincible has established Omni-Man is willing to do whatever it takes to get his point across, even if that means not saving his own son in a time of need.
