WARNING: The following contains SPOILERS for Invincible episode 5, “That Actually Hurt”
Debbie Grayson is on the verge of discovering the truth about her husband Omni-Man in Invincible — thanks to her finding his costume. Omni-Man shockingly murdered the superhero group, the Guardians of the Globe, at the end of episode 1, and ever since, the show has slowly been building up to his wife discovering the truth. Now that Debbie has the costume — the most significant piece of evidence — the question remains: what can she learn from it?
In Invincible episode 5, Debbie discovered Damien Darkblood’s notebook in her closet. The demon detective presumably left his notes where she (and not Nolan, aka Omni-Man) would find them. In the notebook, Debbie sees scribbled notes indicating that Omni-Man was the number one suspect, with “costume,” “blood,” and “DNA” written large and circled. This, paired with her husband’s suspicious demand for the costume when he was leaving the hospital, leads her to look for it.
There aren’t many changes Amazon’s Invincible makes to the comics storyline, but a major one was moving up the Omni-Man villain twist to occur much earlier in the overall story. Likely this was done to set up from the start the primary tension of the season’s arc: Debbie, and eventually her son Mark, discovering the truth. Now that Debbie has the costume, this revelation is inevitable: Although Invincible never clarifies why the costume is such damning evidence for Omni-Man, Damien Dark’s notes hint at how it could prove his guilt. The notes hint that “blood” and “DNA” are also key for learning the truth — because the costume almost certainly has blood from each of the Guardians of the Globe, which could only be explained by Omni-Man being the murderer.
Now that Debbie has the costume, she’ll need a reliable way to test the blood on it. How, exactly, she’ll manage that remains to be seen — Cecil Stedman exorcizing Damien Darkblood proves he already knows the truth and isn’t motivated to pursue it, so he won’t likely be a reliable ally. Debbie could also go to more traditional law enforcement, but it’s unclear how willing the police would be to go against superheroes — not to mention the Global Defense Agency.
It should be of no surprise that in the Invincible comics, Omni-Man is eventually discovered. How the Amazon adaptation will resolve this plotline, however, remains a mystery. Amazon’s Invincible has improved comic characters like Green Ghost, who is a male in Robert Kirkman’s original series; yet, the show — which Kirkman serves as Executive Producer on — is largely staying faithful to the comics. This suggests that it’s unlikely that Omni-Man’s storyline will diverge much from what happens in the comics. Still, with only three episodes left in Invincible season 1, it stands to reason that Mark Grayson will soon discover the truth about his “superhero” dad.
