Spotify just added a new iOS 14 Widget, so Apple iPhone owners now have a quicker and easier way to use the audio streaming service. Apple’s new Home Screen Widget feature is the gift that keeps on giving, with the help of eager developers. Everyone loves music, at least music of their own preference, and this will make it easier to get to those most wanted songs.
Spotify is one of the largest music streaming services in the world, having a tight race with Apple Music for first place. Both streaming giants offer some music for free, but Spotify is much more generous, albeit with the insertion of ads. Of course, a paid subscription removes the ads and Spotify allows a certain number of skips between ads, so it really is quite friendly, even for free users. By comparison, Apple Music offers a selection of radio channels, rather than allowing specific songs to be played.
With the new Home Screen Widget, Spotify users can add a shortcut to an album or podcast. The latest version of the Spotify app needs to be installed on the iPhone and the user should log into the app, in order to see the Widget in the iOS 14 Widget Gallery. There are two sizes available. The single tile version shows the most recently played title, while the wider form of the iOS 14 Widget shows the last five titles. Touching any song title or podcast episode within the Widget will open the album or podcast in Spotify, although it won’t start playing until the play button is pressed. It’s a clever use of this new iPhone feature. Of course, the regular Spotify app icon can still be used to open Spotify, but the Widget is just a faster way to return to something recently played.
Benefits Of The Spotify Widget
There are several benefits to using the Spotify Widget. For starters, suppose a friend or new acquaintance is nearby and notices the recent playback list. This may spark a conversation about music or a particular podcast. It’s a way to show your style and be noticed. Another nice touch, is that Spotify alters the background color of the Widget as the recent titles shift. It adds color and interest to the iPhone Home Screen.
On the other hand, when using this Widget, one might want to keep in mind that the last playback is displayed on the Home Screen with the smaller version and the five most recent will appear in the larger size. Anyone embarrassed to be listening to certain artists, bands, or soundtracks might want to play several of the coolest songs they have in their library before leaving their iPhone where it can be seen by others. Music choice aside, Spotify continues to innovate new features and even though the iPhone Widget is a small thing, it shows how the company keeps striving to satisfy listener needs, and sometimes before they even realize they have them.
