iOS 14 New Features To Try On iPhone After Updating

Apple has released a major update to its operating systems, including iOS which is now up to version 14. There are quite a few changes and even a new app included with iOS 14, but here are just a few of the top new features worth checking out after applying the update to an iPhone.

Apple updates iOS throughout the year with bug fixes, sometimes security and privacy weaknesses are corrected and less frequently, new features are added. The big changes happen once a year and arrive along with new product releases. The Apple Event in September is usually when a new iPhone is announced and along with it, the latest version of iOS, the iPhone’s operating system. The iPhone 12 was delayed this year, but is expected to arrive in October. However, iOS 14 was released in advance of the new Apple smartphone this year.

Now that Apple’s latest iPhone operating system, iOS 14, is available for installation, there are several interesting new features to try. Home screen Widgets are the most visible and an immediately gratifying update. To try this feature out, the user can simply touch and hold the screen until app icons begin to shake, signaling they can be rearranged. A plus symbol will appear in the upper right corner. Tapping will open the Widget panel and several can be added to each page of the Home Screen, if desired. Most interesting among the Widgets is the Smart Stack. This Widget contains several preselected Widgets in a single space, accessible with upward and downward swipes. This quick and easy update puts the information needed throughout the day directly on the iPhone, without the need to open an app. Next up for obvious changes is the new App Library. Every app installed will appear on this separate page – the last to the right of the Home Screen. The App Library automatically organizes apps, which is convenient for those that may have a large collection, as the burden of categorizing apps has been removed.

More Of The Best iOS 14 Changes

Refinements have been made to the user interface of Siri. Instead of taking up the entire screen, Siri now appears in a small bubble at the bottom of the screen when activated with ‘Hey Siri’ or by holding the sleep button. Information from Siri appears at the top, using only a portion of the screen. Likewise, incoming calls appear only at the top of the screen, covering only a portion of what was being viewed. Overall this should result in less of an interruption and feel more natural. Continuing the theme of using less space, FaceTime now allows picture in picture (PIP) mode, similar to when watching a video. Memoji have more style options and more stickers and Apple notes there are over one trillion combinations possible, so personal expression is virtually limitless.

Moving to some of the more practical enhancements, the new Translate app allows spoken conversations that bridge language boundaries. Touch the mic icon in the Translate app, speak, and the message will be instantly translated to any one of eleven languages. It works both ways as well, so a normal interaction is possible, with slight pauses for the translation to be spoken by the app. Messages has also been updated with some of the features found in Slack and other group chat app. It now allows pinning conversations, adding group photos or Memojis to group discussions and direct messages to a specific member. Note that iOS 14 is compatible with iPhone models dating back to 2015, the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus. Apple should be commended on supporting mobile devices that are five years old with the latest iOS 14 update.
