iPhone 12 What To Know Before Buying A ThirdParty Fast Charger

New owners of the iPhone 12 may be surprised to find only an Apple logo sticker and a charging cable are included with the phone, meaning it’s the customers job to find a good charger. This may irk some, but, in truth, the chargers that were once supplied for free by Apple were underpowered and many ended up using a different charger anyway. The good news is that consumers might already have a charger that will work.

Apple not only manufactures the iPhone, the most popular phone in the United States, but it also makes the leading tablet, the iPad. The oldest models came with a 10-watt charger. Apple began increasing the power supplied over the years and most new iPad models include an 18-watt charger. Apple first began as a computer company and it still creates desktop Mac computers and laptops through the MacBook line. The Mac Pro and iMac have built in power supplies, but the laptops come with high-power wall chargers. Starting in 2016, Apple began using USB-C chargers for most MacBook models.

This is quite relevant as any Apple USB-C wall charger can be used with an iPhone 12. The power supplied by Apple’s power adapters ranges from 5 to 96 watts and any of these are compatible with the charging cable that is included with the iPhone 12. The power rating is what determines how fast the battery will top-up. A 5-watt charger will be quite slow and even 10 watts is less than ideal. 18 watts is the standard fast charge, but Apple notes that a 50-percent charge can be obtained in around 30 minutes with a 20-watt or higher adapter. This means a high-power charger can be used, but 20 watts is all that will be drawn, and the larger capacity will not decrease the time to fill the iPhone 12’s battery. Of course, some third-party adapters can also be used.

Third Party Fast Chargers

Using a third-party charger with an iPhone 12 should be done with care as not every high-power charger is safe to use. A mismatched wall adapter can damage the included cable as well as the iPhone battery and cause overheating. Apple made the latest iPhone compatible with a standard called USB Power Delivery (PD). The idea behind the standard is to eliminate global waste caused by every electronic product manufacturer including another charger. Apple is one of the first companies to act on that ideal. The standardization allows another manufacturer’s charger to be safely used.

Since the iPhone model 12 is compatible with PD chargers, any that comply with that standard will be safe to use. Keep in mind that anything rated at over 20 watts will not reduce the time spent waiting for the iPhone 12 to reach a full charge. However, the extra power may be beneficial for those with a laptop. Checking the manufacturers’ specifications of devices owned should answer that question quickly. If the cost of a high powered charger can be shared across multiple devices, the effective cost for each is reduced. If the budget is tight and a compatible charger isn’t already plugged in somewhere, Apple’s 20-watt charger costs $25 and will be a good choice for most iPhone 12 owners.
