IT director Andy Muscheitti has shared a new sketch from the film’s memorably creepy opening scene. While there was plenty of strong buzz surrounding the 2017 adaptation of Stephen King’s IT prior to release, its fair to the say the scale of the film’s success has shocked many in the industry.

In addition to mostly positive reviews for the film itself, IT quickly became the highest grossing domestic R-rated horror movie of all time. The movie did just as well overseas, and to date, IT has taken in nearly $700 million worldwide. The film has also capped off a strong year overall for horror cinema, with movies like Happy Death Day, Get Out, and Gerald’s Game all receiving strong critical notices and financial success.

IT also reimagined Pennywise the Dancing Clown for a new generation, and now director Andy Muscheitti has shared a storyboard of the character on his Instagram account (see the photo below). The sketch features a slight extension of the film’s opening scene itself, where Pennywise first grabs poor Georgie and takes a moment to smell his fear before the creature’s horrifying “killmouth” emerges to take a bite.

When the first stills emerged of Pennywise, many felt the design of the character was too over the top and silly, but those doubts quickly melted away once the trailer revealed Bill Skarsgård’s eerie performance. The actor managed to create a performance that was distinct from Tim Curry’s memorable version of Pennywise from the 1990 IT miniseries while bringing his own fresh take on the role.

The studio is so pleased with the success of IT they’ve launched an Oscar campaign, with categories including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actor for Skarsgård. It will be interesting to see if the film manages to get nominated for any, as horror films historically tend to have a hard time at the Academy Awards. While the occasional genre movie can break through – such as Silence of the Lambs – horror typically gets shunned, so in a year that produced both IT and Get Out, it would be nice to see the filmmakers get some acknowledgement from the academy.

Muschietti is currently hard at work on the sequel to IT, which will deal with The Losers Club reuniting 30 years later to face Pennywise one last time. No casting details have been announced for the film yet, but Jessica Chastain – a fan favorite to take on the role of grown-up Bev Marsh – has stated she’d love to be part of IT: Chapter 2, so hopefully that works out.
