Its Always Sunny Gang Still Unsure If Dennis Is Coming Back

FXX’s It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia is preparing for season 13, but the cast still won’t say one way or the other if Glenn Howerton’s Dennis will be involved or not. That’s been the biggest point of concern surrounding the long-running comedy’s next season, as it was confirmed this past weekend that the show is indeed assembling a writers’ room early next year and is eyeing a potential fall premiere. But the questions remains: Just how different will the series be if the gang doesn’t completely return?

Doubt regarding Howerton’s involvement in season 13 was cast when the actor and writer landed a gig on NBC’s upcoming midseason sitcom AP Bio, opposite Patton Oswalt. His commitments on another network mean his availability for Sunny will presumably be limited, meaning Dennis might only pop up occasionally in the new season, if at all. Obviously, as a co-creator and core cast member, Howerton is an important part of the show’s success and surprising longevity, so everyone involved is keen on seeing him back, though from the sounds of it, no one is entirely certain what that return might entail.

As reported by Indiewire, the cast of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia took part in a panel discussion at the Vulture Festival on Sunday, where the discussion eventually turned to Howerton’s availability for season 13. Fellow series co-creator Rob McElhenney confirmed the production is set to assemble a writers’ room in February and plans to start shooting as early as April, but exact details on what’s in store for the gang remained closely guarded.

Howerton’s response of “Eh, damn it,” when asked about his involvement in season 13 will certainly be scrutinized in the coming days, but the actor managed to avoid making an official comment on the possibility of his return. Howerton opted instead to leave the question of Dennis appearing just a possibility for now, saying, “I will say this: All joking aside, I love these guys and we have an absolute blast working together. We’ll see.”

While that might not satisfy long-time fans concerned the show won’t be the same with a primary member of the gang missing, McElhenney was quick to offer an admittedly vague tease of what’s in store, promising, “We’ve got all sorts of surprises.” Those surprises will presumably come with our without Howerton’s participation.
