Its Time for a New Final Fight Game

However the argument may go, one thing is certain. Last year, Streets of Rage fans were treated to a resurrection of the classic series with the lauded Streets of Rage 4, while diehard Final Fight fans had to settle for another year of disappointment. Final Fight may not have been the first beat ’em up ever made, but it has secured its place as one of the most influential over the years.

The series, introduced to arcades in 1989, was an instant hit for Capcom. It was the first beat ’em up style game they had ever seen for many fans, and it left an undeniable impression.

Its Time for a New Final Fight Game

When Mike Haggar, a former wrestler and unbelievably muscled current mayor of Metro City, has his daughter kidnapped by the Mad Gear Gang, he calls on Jessica’s boyfriend, Cody Travers and his best friend Guy, a ninja in training, to rescue the young girl. Originally intended to be a sequel to the original Street Fighter, Final Fight transitioned to a brawler after Capcom saw the success of 1987’s Double Dragon. Final Fight introduced characters that played differently, with Haggar being the slowest but most powerful, Cody the all-around fighter and Guy the least damaging but fastest combatant. The original game also introduced the beat ’em up staple of special moves that were powerful and unblockable but would drain the player’s life bar.

Final Fight was a massive hit for Capcom and would spawn two sequels, a proper 3-D fighting game, Final Fight Revenge, and multiple guest spots in other Capcom fighting games like Street Fighter Alpha. However, fans haven’t had a chance to clean up Metro City’s streets since the days of Final Fight: Streetwise, released to the PlayStation 2 and Xbox in 2006.

Although the Final Fight series has lain dormant for these past decades, Capcom clearly hasn’t completely forgotten about Guy, Cody and Haggar as all three have continued to appear in Capcom games. Most recently, Cody appeared in the past two Street Fighter games alongside multiple villains from the Mad Gear Gang as playable combatants. Street Fighter IV featured Poison, Hugo and Rolento, while Street Fighter V included hulking monster baddie Abigail and Guy’s martial arts master Zeku.

Its Time for a New Final Fight Game

With the rousing success of last year’s Streets of Rage 4, the time seems right for Capcom to take the steps necessary to get a new Final Fight into development by licensing the series out to developers who care about it. This was done to great effect with Streets of Rage 4, as the developers clearly cared about the lore and world of Sega’s equally important yet long-dormant beat ’em up.

Capcom as a company is in a great spot. The past few years have been the best in terms of profit it has ever seen, thanks to the successful revitalizations of the Resident Evil series and Monster Hunter World’s record-breaking sales. Titles like Devil May Cry 5 receiving both critical praise and huge sales have only further bolstered the company’s financials and perhaps given it the freedom to explore older titles, with the company stating in a 2019 annual report that it looked to “awaken dormant intellectual properties.”

The past few years have seen Capcom do just that, marking a huge success as it remade Resident Evil 2 to critical praise and numerous awards recently updated infamously hard classic Ghosts ‘n Goblins series with Ghost ‘n Goblins Resurrection on the Nintendo Switch. If even cult classics like Ghosts ‘n Goblins can get another shot at modern release, a huge series of the past like Final Fight should also get another chance.

One complaint of Streets of Rage 4 is that it went a little too old school, featuring a limited life system and no real customization or progression other than the completion of levels. A new Final Fight that brought back the classic heroes into a game featuring RPG-style leveling or an unlockable skill tree would modernize the series. A new entry could even feature a separate unlockable “old school” mode that took the game back to its 1989 quarter-consuming arcade roots.

Whatever Capcom does in the future, it would be wise to consider bringing back the Final Fight series in some iteration. Fans are more than ready to clean up the streets of Metro City in a brand new Final Fight adventure.
