Its Too Late For Robert Englund To Return As Freddy Krueger

Robert Englund will forever be Freddy Krueger for many fans, but his time to reprise the role in a new Nightmare on Elm Street has passed. While Englund is a true legend of the horror genre, and stands alongside names like Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi when it comes to importance within it, without Freddy, that likely wouldn’t be the case. That’s not to say Englund wasn’t a talented, regularly working actor prior to A Nightmare on Elm Street, but it’s definitely stalking dreams that made him immortal.

On the back of his decade-plus tenure playing the Springwood Slasher, Englund was able to carve out a busy career for himself both in and out of the horror genre. He’s played Freddy Krueger on The Simpsons and The Goldbergs, popped up on shows like Supernatural and Criminal Minds, starred in dozens of horror movies, and could possibly even see a resurgence in overall popularity via his upcoming villain role on Stranger Things season 4.

While Englund is still very active as an actor, he’s said multiple times in recent years that he’s done playing Freddy, and has no plans to return to the role for another Nightmare on Elm Street installment. Doing his small role on The Goldbergs, putting the make-up on for the Nightmares in the Makeup Chair documentary, or voicing Freddy in an animated movie or video game are another matter, but Englund just isn’t up for a full return to his signature character. As much as fans may not want to accept that, Englund is right, the time for his return has come and gone.

The Current State Of The Nightmare On Elm Street Series

Its Too Late For Robert Englund To Return As Freddy Krueger

It’s been 11 years now since fans last saw Freddy Krueger, and the world is arguably overdue for a return of the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. Yet, it’s understandable why such a return is taking so long to make happen. The 2010 A Nightmare on Elm Street remake was a total disaster, even despite a game Jackie Earle Haley trying to make the Freddy character his own. Rooney Mara’s lead performance was extremely weak, many fans were left grossed out by the decision to explicitly make Freddy a child molester, and the remake stuck way too close to the original–even outright copying scenes, but doing them noticeably worse.

Even though the Nightmare on Elm Street remake did actually make a sizable profit before leaving theaters, it’s telling that the overall response to it was so negative that New Line never moved forward with a sequel. In the years since the remake hit, there’s been rumors that come and go of a franchise revival, or another reboot, but none of them have led to anything substantial happening. A few years back, the family of late Freddy creator and legendary horror director Wes Craven regained the rights to the franchise, and Robert Englund himself has said they’re considering several possible approaches to bringing back A Nightmare on Elm Street. For now though, there’s been no concrete indication that a resurrection of Freddy Krueger is currently in the works.

Why It’s Too Late For A Robert Englund Freddy Comeback

Its Too Late For Robert Englund To Return As Freddy Krueger

It’s no secret that many A Nightmare on Elm Street fans would love nothing more than to see Robert Englund play Freddy Krueger one more time in a proper movie. While Englund has seemed somewhat open to doing so at times, that feeling never seems to last on his part, and it’s no wonder why. Englund is 74-years-old and—after not being asked back to play Freddy in the 2010 Nightmare remake–maintains that he’s just not up to the physical rigors of playing Freddy anymore. For one, playing Freddy requires spending hours in the makeup chair for months on end, both putting on and taking off the complex makeup appliances necessary to create the iconic character’s burned visage.

Beyond that, when one looks back at the prior Nightmare on Elm Street movies, Freddy was a deceptively physical role, and he’d often get into physical scraps with his targets. While some would argue that’s what stunt men are for, Englund tried to do as much of his own stunt work as he could in those older Freddy movies, as the few times he didn’t (such as when Nightmare 2 briefly recast Freddy over a pay dispute) the change ended up pretty obvious. Englund brought a unique physicality to his performance as Freddy Krueger, one that it’s doubtful anyone could reproduce. It’s no wonder Englund doesn’t think he’s in the shape required to carry that load anymore, and also not surprising why he’d want to avoid trying. Englund loves Freddy, and doesn’t want to risk disappointing fans by failing to live up to his past work.

How A Robert Englund Freddy Comeback Could Work

While Robert Englund’s days of playing Freddy Krueger for a full A Nightmare on Elm Street movie may have passed, that doesn’t mean he has to be done completely with the character. Englund himself has proposed a scenario that would see him reprise the role in live-action, albeit briefly. Englund’s idea made Freddy into a more IT-like shapeshifter, having him take on different forms depending on the target of his fury. One of these forms could indeed be Englund’s classic Freddy, and the horror icon said he’d be up for that type of limited comeback. It’s not quite what Freddy fans might be pining for, but it would at least keep Englund’s version of Freddy canon going forward.

If that doesn’t work out, Englund has also suggested a different way he’d be happy to reprise the role. In 2020, Englund said he’d love to voice Freddy in an animated A Nightmare on Elm Street film, which actually could be a genius way to resurrect the franchise. Such a project could not only bring back Englund as Freddy, but Freddy’s past nemeses like Nancy and Alice, and allow the characters onscreen to still be the same age as they were in the 1980s, picking up the original series’ plot threads. It could also go the Halloween 2018 route, and solely be a sequel to the original Wes Craven classic. For now though, Freddy’s dead, until an idea materializes that’s deemed worthy of his return.
