As a part of D&D Live 2021, Wizards of the Coast and G4 have announced a Dungeons & Dragons table with actor/musician Jack Black and film director Kevin Smith, among other celebrity guests. Further names should be added to the roster in coming weeks. Proceeds from the streaming event are going to Extra Life, a charity that helps fund Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

D&D Live has become an annual proceeding for Wizards of the Coast, and its 2021 edition – hosted in partnership with the G4 gaming network – is scheduled for July 16 and 17. On top of four celebrity games, other features will include interviews, giveaways, product announcements, and a Dungeon Master roundtable. Free streaming will be available via the G4 and Dungeons & Dragons channels on Twitch and YouTube, as well as NBC’s Peacock service.

According to a Wizards of the Coast post on Instagram, other planned guests for the “Lost Odyssey: Last Light” table include comedian and beatbox musician Reggie Watts, frequent Smith partner Jason Mewes, and actress Lauren Lapkus, best known for the Netflix show Orange is the New Black. The table’s host is Kate Welch, whose media credits include Fungeons & Flagons, the She Geek Show, Lost Odyssey: The Book of Knowledge, and hosting previous D&D Lives. Black is of course known for movies like School of Rock and his band Tenacious D, while Smith is famous for everything from Clerks to his work in comics and TV. The two are often spokespeople for geek culture – Black for example hosts a YouTube gaming channel, Jablinski Games.

More details are promised as D&D Live 2021 approaches. This includes exact timing, as well as an unannounced special guest. D&D Live 2020 featured a host of Hollywood names, such as Amy Acker, Felicia Day, Matthew Lillard, David Harbour, Thomas Middleditch, Brian Posehn, and Kevin Sussman. It also featured several WWE wrestlers like Alexa Bliss and Xavier Woods. There’s no indication of who 2021’s mystery guest might be, but Wizards of the Coast tends to prefer people who are already fans of Dungeons & Dragons.

It could potentially be more difficult to recruit celebrities for the 2021 show. While a number of actors, musicians, and others have played Dungeons & Dragons – such as Vin Diesel, Moby, Stephen Colbert, and Patton Oswalt – many of them were trapped at home in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and lockdown laws still vary from place to place. As restrictions lift, live events and productions are once more picking up steam, in some cases having to make up for lost time.
