Jack Quaid Interview Star Trek Lower Decks S2 Finale

Now that Star Trek: Lower Decks has wrapped up season 2, Ensign Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid) has broken out of his neurotic shell and become more of the Starfleet hero he dreams of being. Boimler began Star Trek: Lower Decks season 2 serving on the USS Titan under Captain William Riker (Jonathan Frakes) but after Bradward is demoted back to the USS Cerritos, he began rising to the occasion and saving the day, including in Star Trek: Lower Decks season 2’s finale.

Screen Rant spoke with Jack Quaid about Star Trek: Lower Decks season 2 being Boimler’s year, Brad getting his own transporter clone in William Boimler, his real-life friendship with castmate Tawny Newsome mirroring Boimler’s relationship with Ensign Beckett Mariner, and a hint about what’s next for Boimler in Star Trek: Lower Decks season 3.

WARNING: This interview contains spoilers for Star Trek: Lower Decks season 2!

Screen Rant: Hi Jack, congrats on a fantastic season 2.

Jack Quaid: Thank you. Yeah, it’s crazy. You record episodes in a room somewhere in Burbank and then you finally get to see them. You know, I watched [the show] just like you guys watched it. I watched it as a fan because I don’t really know what it’s gonna look like until I see it. It’s been awesome. I really love what [Lower Decks showrunner Mike McMahan and his team] have done this season. It’s been great.

Me too, especially since season 2 is pretty much Boimler’s season.

Jack Quaid: [laughs] It’s Boimler’s year, baby!

He’s still the Boimler we know and love but in pretty much every episode, he rose to the occasion and saved the day, including the finale with the dolphins.

Jack Quaid: Yeah, that’s been really cool for me to see. Especially considering where he was at the very beginning of season 1. I really love that he has stepped up in all of these ways and I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that he got what he always wanted. He was on the [USS] Titan, he then got demoted from the Titan despite the fact that he stepped up and saved the day.

So I think, in a lot of ways, his worst nightmare happened to him. And a lot of the time when that happens to people, they grow from it. It’s like, “I can’t sink any lower. Let’s explore other options.” So I think Boimler realized that getting promoted is great but it should never come at the expense of your friends and your family. I think that he’s taken that lesson and he’s growing in confidence. He had a lot of big wins this season. But what’s been really cool for me to watch is that Boimler is growing yet he is still Boimler. And that, I think, is the biggest win of all.

It’s a testament to the writing that they kept Boimler the same but evolving and improving.

Jack Quaid: Boimler’s not gonna be the guy who ruins a situation anymore. He’ll still be his neurotic self but he’ll pull his own weight now, which I really love.

I want to go through Boimler’s greatest season 2 hits. There are so many. What are your favorite season 2 moments? Was it getting beat up by Tom Paris (Robert Duncan McNeill)?

Jack Quaid: [laughs] That was pretty great. Actually, that was one of my favorite moments because when I recorded that, I was in a hotel in North Carolina shooting Scream. All the cast members were staying on the same floor so I was neighbored by two cast members. I remember I was recording that scene where I was screaming to Tom Paris once [Boimler] falls through the Jeffries Tube and lands on the bridge. “Tom Paris, can you sign my plate? I’m a really big fan!” I was screaming at the top of my lungs in my hotel room and I remember I got a text from my neighbor closest to the closet saying, “Are you okay? And who is Tom Paris?” So that was probably my favorite thing. That was a great moment.

I loved recording “I, Excretus,” [which was] season 2, episode 8, where [Boimler’s] in the Borg simulator trying to get the perfect score. I think that might have been my favorite thing to record in terms of the manic energy of Boimler in that situation, and having his perfectionism go to such a crazy extent. There were some great moments in “wej Duj (Three Ships)” too where I got to suck up to all of the bridge officers. I thought that was such a fun little journey for Boimler. So I’ve had a great time this season.

You mentioned Boimler basically beating the Borg but I loved the joke about when he told the Borg Queen (Alice Krige) about his acid reflux and that assimilating him would be a net negative for the Collective. Because that’s exactly what I would try to say in that situation.

Jack Quaid: Oh for sure. And as a person who has acid reflux, I really leaned into that pretty hard.

What are your thoughts on Brad’s transporter clone William Boimler?

Jack Quaid: I loved doing that scene where I basically got to talk with myself. It was so funny. I like that William Boimler has this kind of swagger to him immediately. It’s just really funny to me. He has this kind of charming, devil-may-care attitude but he is still Boimler. That was really funny to me. I loved recording that scene and to play off of yourself was so interesting. I hope William comes back because that’s such a fun dynamic between the two of them.

Mariner and Boimler got drunk at the same bar Kirk and Spock got drunk in. It definitely feels like Mariner is a lot more impressed with Boimler now. Especially after he beat the evil computer played by Jeffrey Combs. Their friendship is at another level now.

Jack Quaid: The fact that I got to say, “You’ve been Boimed!” – I love it so much. That’s such a funny thing to say. I love their evolving relationship. Like any relationship, it definitely goes up and down but I think where they landed towards the end of the season is so cool. I especially love that episode where they’re drinking at the bar and they etched their names next to Kirk and Spock. We’re not trying to say that we’re the new Kirk and Spock but I think we’re trying to say that we’re our show’s version of Kirk and Spock. That alone was just so touching to me.

I remember Tawny read that episode before I did and she texted me saying, “Oh my God! Have you read episode 5 yet? They do something so cool!” We were both very, very excited about that moment. Also, I’ve gotten to know Tawny really, really well. We’ve become genuinely great friends. It’s been really cool to see our relationship grow as Boimler and Mariner’s does.

Going into season 3, we had a cliffhanger with Captain Freeman (Dawnn Lewis) getting arrested. I can’t imagine Boimler won’t do everything in his power to help Mariner prove Captain Freeman isn’t guilty of blowing up Pakled Planet.

Jack Quaid: That definitely hit Boimler pretty hard. I don’t think it him as hard as Mariner since that’s her mom getting wrongfully accused. I think it hit the entire crew really hard because, as we see in that [finale] episode it comes off of such a high. The Cerritos pulling off this impossible task. We see everyone at the bar, we see Lower Deckers interacting with bridge crew officers and everybody having a great time. Seeing them closer than we’ve ever seen them before. And then, getting hit with his gut-punch of Captain Freeman getting arrested is just devastating for everybody.

Boimler really respects the Captain. As much as he sucks up to her, that just comes out of genuine admiration and respect. The fact that something like that could happen to someone like her is devastating for him. We’ll see how that comes to fruition in season 3. I mean, I know, but I’m not gonna say it! But it’s really cool. The first episode of season 3 is really cool. I can’t wait for you guys to see it.
