James Bond movies are known for their spectacularly evil villains, but sometimes it turns out that henchmen were even scarier and more formidable.

With every new James Bond installment, viewers can always bet on both the primary and secondary antagonist being formidable. Raoul Silva does plenty of heavy lifting despite having several men under his payroll, including the skilled mercenary, Patrice. Such is also the case for Auric Goldfinger, who has Oddjob by his side.

However, there are a few occasions when the criminal masterminds become eclipsed by the men or women under their command. Never outshine the master? These henchmen don’t care about that rule. With their ferociousness and ruthlessness, they threaten to put an end to Bond’s tenure as Agent 007 without needing much help from their bosses.

10 Mr. Hinx – Spectre

Christopher Waltz disappoints as the overarching antagonist, Blofeld, but Mr. Hinx (Dave Bautista) does a great job of filling the void. Hinx hardly speaks a word and he also has the coolest car in the movie—the Jaguar C-X75—which he uses in a car chase with Bond in the streets of Rome.

Hinx has plenty of memorable moments and his introduction is a magnificent one, as he takes a fellow SPECTRE member’s place by gouging his eyes out. His duels with Bond take him from icy mountains to a train where he gives the MI6 agent a beatdown. Bond would probably be dead if it wasn’t for Dr. Madeline Swann. Meanwhile, Blofeld is just keeping safe at his Morrocan base.

9 Red Grant – From Russia With Love

Blofeld takes so much of a back seat in the movie that assassin and henchman Red Grant feels like the main villain. After the death of Dr. No, Blofeld is tasked with killing 007 so that he won’t prove to be a nuisance in the future.

Grant adopts the patient approach with Bond. He stalks him first, making sure he first does things that are of benefit to SPECTRE, including delivering an encoding device. He kills a couple of men that try to take out Bond so he can have the pleasure of taking 007’s life himself. He even befriends Bond by impersonating a British spy.

8 Jaws – The Spy Who Loved Me

It’s not just the shark-like teeth that make Jaws stand out, it’s his general endurance. When a car full of henchmen pursues Bond and crashes into a house, Jaws is the only one to come out unscathed. With his teeth, he can bite anything, which means he rarely needs a gun to kill people.

As Jaws is busy chasing Bond around, the villain Mr. Stromberg sits comfortably at his underwater base. Stromberg wants to wipe out most of the earth’s population so that he can host the survivors in his underwater empire named Atlantis. Not as impressive as Jaws almost going full Dracula on Bond inside a train.

7 May Day – A View To Kill

Before Brixton Lore, there was the henchwoman May Day in A View To Kill. The movie has a pretty low Rotten Tomatoes score, thanks to Bond being generally dull and the chip-obsessed villain Max Zorin trying to appear smarter than he is. Luckily, May Day, who is super strong due to Nazi experiments performed on her as a baby, saves the day.

May Day can be remembered for defenestrating a businessman who was unwilling to invest in Zorin’s company and killing a detective with a poisoned stage prop. She rarely smiles, except when Bond manages to seduce her.

6 Zao – Die Another Day

When mentioning Bond villains, the name Colonel Tan-Sun Moon rarely comes to viewers’ minds. The North Korean general spends most of his time behind closed doors. But intelligence operative Zao adopts a different approach. He spends his time on the field, protecting the interests of his superiors.

Staring at Zao is no easy task. His eyes keep glowing and thanks to an exploding case containing diamonds, he has pieces of the mineral embedded in his face. Zao also engages Bond in one of the best chase scenes in the franchise. Thanks to the thermal vision of his Jaguar, he is able to spot Bond’s camouflaged Aston Martin. He eventually dies an iconic death, thanks to a falling ice chandelier.

5 Baron Samedi – Live And Let Die

Villain Dr. Kananga aka Mr. Big fails to impress because he is a parody of African dictators. Big rules the Caribbean island of San Monique and also happens to run a drug empire in Harlem, where he plans to eliminate all competitors. His henchman, Baron Samedi, on the other hand, is menacing. His face is painted like a witch doctor and he actually is one, as he practices voodoo.

Mr. Big is unable to entirely control him, hence he lets him perform his ritual practices. He is also immortal. Bond throws him into a coffin full of poisonous snakes, which bite him to death. But at the end of the film, Samdei is seen laughing inside the same train that is carrying Bond and his love interest.

4 Nick Nack – The Man With The Golden Gun

Scaramanga has three nipples, an island, and a gun made from gold, but that’s just about it. The assassin isn’t as intriguing as his butler and housekeeper, Nick Nack. The henchman not only has a better name than his boss, but also a knack for frustrating Bond.

There is also the fact that he tries to kill Scaramanga on a couple of occasions so that he can inherit his vast estate. Later in the film, he sneaks into Bond’s boat and attempts to kill him as he is making love to Mary Goodnight. Bond gets the better of him and defeats him by … locking him in a suitcase.

3 Dario – License To Kill

The movie is generally good, but the villain, Sanchez, is quite similar to many others from the era. Several movies in the ’80s had drug lords as the main antagonists, thank to it being the Escobar era and Sanchez was no different. His henchman, Dario (Benicio Del Toro), stands out as the most interesting baddie in the movie.

When Sanchez’s mistress is caught sleeping with another man, Dario cuts out the man’s heart and gives it to her so she can have it for life. He also evades the DEA, yet Sanchez gets captured. Dario later kills the wife of Bond’s popular CIA ally, Felix Leiter. He also has an incredible fight scene with Bond in which he attempts to murder the MI6 agent on a cocaine conveyor belt.

2 Mr. Kidd & Mr. Wint – Diamonds Are Forever

Like “The Cousins” in Breaking Bad, it’s sometimes better when henchmen come in pairs. Mr. Kidd and Mr. Wint are hired by Blofeld and tasked with murdering everyone involved in the diamond smuggling business. The henchmen perform their assignments with much glee and the two are so close that they even complete each other’s sentences and enjoy holding hands.

Their killing methods are quite creative too. They murder a dentist by placing a scorpion on his back. They also tie a Bond girl’s feet to a concrete block and throw her into a swimming pool. Not to mention that they lock Bond in a coffin and try to have him cremated alive. There is no shortage of entertainment with these two.

1 Fiona Volpe – Thunderball

Emilio Largo looks badass, but he doesn’t mingle with Bond as much as Fiona Volpe does. The first henchwoman in the franchise is the perfect femme fatale. She seduces a NATO pilot in order to steal a fighter jet from him. She also doesn’t hesitate to kill her own men. if need be.

Among Fiona’s toys is a motorcycle that comes equipped with a missile launcher to destroy the cars that she is chasing. Fiona is also Dominic Toretto at the wheel and Bond is very impressed with her driving. She sleeps with Bond then tries to kill him, but the MI6 agent comes out on top after using her as a human shield.
