James Camerons Avatar Screwed Over The Last Airbender Twice

Avatar: The Last Airbender, the award-winning Nickelodeon show, inspired a sequel series and live-action film that both had to be altered because of James Cameron’s Avatar. In 2005, Avatar: The Last Airbender aired on Nickelodeon and ran for three seasons. The show followed a group of young teenagers with supernatural bending abilities as the main character, Aang, fulfilled his destiny as the Avatar. Within the universe of the show, there is only one person at a time who can master all four elements: air, fire, water, and earth. That person is the Avatar and they are meant to bring balance to the world.

By contrast, James Cameron’s Avatar, which was released in 2009, included very different “avatars.” In Avatar, humans can control synthetically created bodies of the Na’vi, an alien race on the world of Pandora. Using these avatars, humans can explore the planet without oxygen masks and can also communicate and interact with the Na’vi. Avatar became the highest-grossing film of all time and was only recently dethroned by Avengers: Endgame, but the film had power long before it grossed nearly $3 billion dollars — the word “avatar” was dropped from the title of The Last Airbender in April of 2008, almost a whole year before Avatar premiered.

When Avatar: The Last Airbender was in the early stages of being remade as a live-action movie, the title of the movie was identical to the show. But when the film’s producers learned of James Cameron’s Avatar, they knew that it was a bad idea to use a title that sounded too much like the trademarked “James Cameron’s Avatar” [via Hollywood Reporter]. Even though Nickelodeon had trademarked “Nickelodeon Avatar: The Last Airbender,” they dropped “avatar” from the film and simply called the film The Last Airbender. The film was hated by many fans of the original show, but it made a respectable profit at the box office and led to the creation of a sequel series for Avatar: The Last Airbender.

However, because the word “avatar” had become firmly attached to James Cameron’s groundbreaking CGI juggernaut, The Legend of Korra’s showrunners were faced with a problem: They initially wanted the show to be called Avatar: Legend of Korra – and it is still referred to by that title in some instances — but the showrunners knew that officially using “avatar” in a title was once again out of the question because of James Cameron’s Avatar.

The creators of The Legend of Korra thought that the sequel show might have benefited from association with the film, The Last Airbender (though history has proven that likely wouldn’t have been the case), so the show was originally announced under the awful and confusing title of The Last Airbender: The Legend of Korra [via Wall Street Journal]. Luckily, the title was changed to The Legend of Korra, which allowed the show to develop its own fanbase and forge its own path, distinctly separated from Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Last Airbender, and Avatar.
