James Stokoes KungFu Epic Orphan And The Five Beasts Revealed

Writer, artist, colorist, and letterer James Stokoe revealed his new series Orphan And The Five Beasts, a Kung-Fu epic from Dark Horse Comics. The series comes following the one-man comic book band’s 2019 Eisner-nominated Sobek. Stokoe has carved a unique path of creator-owned stories and vibrantly-artistic takes on licensed books.

Stokoe gained prominence with his creator-owned titles like the beloved fantasy comic Orc Stain and the sci-fi food title, Wonton Soup. The writer made waves in 2016 with his critically acclaimed series, Aliens: Dead Orbit. He has also worked on other licensed titles, including several runs with the world’s most beloved kaiju with stories like Godzilla in Hell and Godzilla: Half-Century War for IDW. Sobek, a series chronicling the life of a giant crocodile god, marked Stokoe’s return to creator-owned stories after several years.

In an exclusive report from AV Club, artwork from Stokoe’s newest series was revealed as well as some brief plot information. Orphan And The Five Beasts is an homage to classic Hong Kong martial arts flicks. Hyper-detailed and beautiful artwork will tell the tale of a vengeful warrior. If the series’ covers are anything to go by, the Orphan will have to face down everything from muscle-bound giants to a limb-chopping cook. The comic will hit stores on March 17th, 2021.

While Stokoe has worked on action-packed comics like Batman before, Orphan And The Five Beasts is the creator’s first solo foray that has featured lots of punching and kicking in a while after a stint focusing on xenomorphs, kaiju, and a giant crocodile god. Explosive action is something that comes as naturally to Stokoe as slow-paced horror and dread. The brightly-colored and wild world of Kung-Fu cinema is a perfect fit for an artist like Stokoe who has made a career capitalizing on all that is colorful and wild.

2021 already looks to be a good year for fans of all things martial arts. Apart from Stokoe’s new contribution to the genre, Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is set to hit theaters in July. Home to eye-popping aesthetic and fight scenes, the martial arts genre is showing a wider prominence across several genres. With Shang-Chi coming to theaters and Bruce Lee’s Warrior on television, it was only a matter of time until more Kung-Fu stories started dropping in comics as well. Luckily, writer/artist James Stokoe is leading that charge with Orphan And The Five Beasts.
