Jared Leto Makes Bizarre Acting Prep Claim for House of Gucci

Jared Leto recently spoke about the bizarre ways in which he prepared for his role in House of Gucci. Leto portrays the late Paolo Gucci in the film, which was just released in theaters earlier this month. Paolo Gucci was the Vice President and managing director of the famous luxury brand, Gucci, for a year before being fired, later going on to start his own company.

House of Gucci, directed by Ridley Scott, is an adaptation of the book, The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed, written by Sara Gay Forden in 2001 and based on the real-life story of the Gucci family. The film follows Patrizia Reggiani in the late 1970s, portraying her connection to the Gucci family and business. Alongside Leto, the movie also stars other big names like Lady Gaga as Reggiani and Adam Driver as Maurizio Gucci (her husband).

During an interview with The Playlist for House of Gucci, Leto used colorful metaphors to describe his preparation process. He makes exuberant comparisons between himself and stereotypical Italian food in order to convey his dedication to the role, even joking that he snorted “lines of arrabbiata sauce.” He believes that by going through this outlandish affair, he was able to fully capture the essence of Paolo Gucci in his performance. “I did it all. I was snorting lines of arrabbiata sauce by the middle of this movie, I had olive oil for blood. This was a deep dive I did. If you took a biopsy of my skin, it would come back as parmesan cheese! This is my love letter to Italy. There was a lot of work and preparation, and yes, I had an Italian accent, and I enjoyed and embraced that and lived in that space as much as I could, and for as long as I possibly could. I climbed into that creative cave and came out through the bowels and intestines into the esophagus of the one and only Paolo Gucci.”

Leto has a history of method acting. He became well-known for the practice after his award-winning performance in Dallas Buyers Club (2013), where he starved himself for the role to lose weight and make himself look ill. Although, Leto has been doing this for many years, and has a track record of extreme weight loss and gain for his characters. Leto is known for how seriously he takes his performances, most notably his portrayal of the Joker in Suicide Squad (2016). It was rumored that he gave out used condoms and sex toys, as well as dead animals as gifts, however, Leto has since denied some of these, although he did give out other in-character gifts to his co-stars throughout filming.

Lady Gaga also took to odd methods to prepare for her role, claiming to have taken notes from a house cat, a fox, and a panther. For the role of Paolo Gucci, Jared Leto underwent over 3 hours of make-up to transform into the character, making the actor almost unrecognizable, and further proving his dedication to the role. While Leto appeared to be joking in the above quote, he was willing to undergo this gruelling process for House of Gucci, and evidence from previous projects suggests that snorting lines of arrabbiata sauce is not too farfetched for this dedicated performer.
