Jared Leto’s DCEU Joker Future Should Be Death of The Family

With Jared Leto’s current role as the Joker in the DCEU having been so minimal so far, one interesting method could save the character for the franchise: by using the Death of the Family comic as a basis for a film adaptation. Though Leto’s version of the Joker isn’t an entirely poor version of the infamous supervillain, it’s safe to say he’s perhaps the least memorable of them, as a result of featuring so little in the current film universe.

The plot of Death of the Family is the epitome of memorable. Taking inspiration from the iconic Death in the Family storyline – which saw the death of the young Robin, Jason Todd, in a moment that made history – the series details the Clown Prince of Crime tracking down each member of the Batfamily in order to break them through physical and psychological trauma, in order to isolate the Dark Knight. Though not a cheery comic by any means, this story proved popular with readers, as it showed the Joker at his most unsettling, and managed to set a tone that made it feel as though the various established superheroes and sidekicks weren’t protected by plot armor as a result of their popularity or position, adding real stakes to every page. Combine this with some unique and unsettling visuals – such as the youngest Robin, Damian Wayne, being trapped suspended over dead birds and maggots for some seriously loaded symbolism – and it’s clear it’s a part of the DC catalog that is primed for a big-screen edition (even if it might have to be toned down).

The DCEU wouldn’t be able to simply totally replicate this, of course – as several of the main characters in Death of the Family don’t exist in the universe yet, and this version of the Joker has cut off his own face at this point – but identical replication isn’t how the best comic book movies are made. Instead, taking inspiration from the format of the comic could really create something special around Leto’s Joker. After all, the most engaging part of the plot is seeing how the Joker uses his knowledge of the various characters to construct elaborate plans targeted at their emotional and physical weak spots. Leto’s Joker has been established as somewhat less playful, and more bloodthirsty than his other counterparts – so this storyline would not only suit this edition of the character, but it could properly define these characteristics.

Theoretically, it could also develop something of a timeline, should those involved in looking at the larger structure of the DCEU want Harley Quinn or Batman to have some of their backstories before the “current event” films to be fleshed out more. While this would take away some of the high-stakes atmosphere – because these characters would clear make it out unscathed – establishing rapport between Gotham characters would no doubt pay off both in fan hype and building their dynamic for potential future film endeavors. And the fact that Ben Affleck’s Batman arrived in the DCEU fully formed and at the end of his career does leave room to introduce other Bat-family characters to fall into Joker’s game.

A Death of the Family film wouldn’t fix the issues many have with the questionable design of Leto’s Joker, or make them forget how lackluster many elements of his debut in Suicide Squad was, but it could achieve something else. This version of the character has been undeniably under-utilized, and with audiences clearly fascinated by the villain, it would be a perfect choice to blindside them with a movie that brings the Clown Prince of Crime back into the foreground in the most dramatic fashion possible without having to tear up the timeline entirely. An adaptation of Death of the Family could do this with aplomb.
