Jared Letos Morbius Powers Explained New & From The Comics

The titular protagonist of Morbius, played by Jared Leto, has several superhuman powers, some of which are based on the Marvel comic books, and some of which are new. Morbius the Living Vampire initially appeared as an antagonist to Spider-Man but has also had his own series and stories in which he is more of a tortured antihero. He’s now joining the ranks of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, along with another flawed antihero, that of Tom Hardy’s Venom. It also seems that Venom and Morbius are officially MCU-set, but the mechanics of it are a bit tricky.

In the comic books, Dr. Michael Morbius is a Nobel Prize-winning biochemist with a rare blood disease that he is desperate to cure. He devises a procedure that involves using vampire bat blood cells and electricity, and while he does cure himself, it comes with the unexpected cost of becoming a living vampire. Along with several new powers, Morbius also gains a primal need to consume human blood and constantly wars with himself over his humanity. It’s also worth noting that Morbius does not possess the weaknesses of traditional vampires, such as garlic, crucifixes, and sunlight.

Although not everything is known about Morbius, Jared Leto’s character seems to be following essentially the same journey — but with a key difference. The Dr. Morbius of the Marvel comics devises his own medical cure, but in the film he’s seen approaching a mysterious cave, cutting his hand, and holding it up to a stringed apparatus before being swarmed by bats. Whatever procedure this is, it seems more supernatural than scientific. Because his mechanism of transformation seems to be different, the Morbius protagonist may possess powers that operate somewhat differently from his comic-book counterpart’s. That said, many of the abilities displayed in the newest Morbius movie trailer do seem to take directly from the comics. Here’s every power shown in the trailer and whether it’s new or from the comics.

Increased Strength And Speed

The first new ability Dr. Morbius mentions is “increased strength and speed,” both of which he can be seen using in various fight scenes. This is a standard trait of traditional vampires and one that Morbius the Living Vampire possesses in the Marvel comics. More than simply increased, Morbius’ strength and speed are actually superhuman, as he’s even fast enough to dodge bullets. These enhanced physical powers come with a slight caveat in the comics, however, as Morbius claims to feel somewhat weaker and more lethargic during the day. Though it’s possible Morbius sets up Marvel’s Blade movie, Morbius himself isn’t a true vampire, meaning sunlight won’t kill him. However, Leto does wear a large hood in several scenes after his transformation, so this could be hinting at the character’s sun-aversion.

Bat Radar

Dr. Morbius also claims to possess “some sort of bat radar,” which is represented by a pulse of energy emanating from him out into his surroundings. Echolocation is another of Morbius’ powers from the comic books, which is connected to his heightened senses, particularly hearing. Real bats use sonar to detect their surroundings by emitting sound waves that bounce off objects and return an echo full of information, all of this at a frequency human ears can’t detect. The subtle light that’s shown pulsing outward from Leto in the Moribus tailer could be representative of this high-frequency sound, though it’s unclear whether he’s emitting it vocally or psychically. The comics’ Morbius the Living Vampire has powers that are both physical and psionic, so both are equally possible.

Night Vision

Along with the heightened hearing that grants him sonar abilities, Morbius the Living Vampire also possesses heightened vision in the comics, particularly the ability to see at night. Dr. Morbius doesn’t directly reference this power in the film trailer, but during a moment when he utilizes his elevated hearing down in a dark subway tunnel, his eyes also change in appearance to a bright white with irregular pupils. This could actually be playing into another somewhat psionic power, gliding, but it may also indicate that Morbius plans to incorporate the Living Vampire’s night vision from the comics. Given that Morbius’ bat-like hearing is on the table and that superhuman sight and hearing would go hand-in-hand, this seems quite likely.

Gliding

The last of Morbius’ movie powers that are from the comic books is his ability to glide on air, which he does in the subway tunnel and later in the trailer when he jumps off a bridge in a burst of purple energy. In the comics, Morbius is able to glide because his bones became hollow during his transformation, though the power could also be linked to his slight psionic abilities. Morbius seems to be focusing primarily on the doctor’s physical transformation and powers, so hollow bones would likely be the film’s explanation, but it’s also possible that Morbius’ gliding ability will simply be left unexplained as its own individual power.

Controlling Bats

Jared Leto’s Morbius compares to the Marvel comics in many ways, but may also have one power that his comic counterpart never did. At the end of the new trailer, there’s a brief scene showing a giant cloud of bats whirling around Morbius, while he stands firm and holds out a clawed hand. It echoes an earlier clip when the doctor is swarmed by bats during his transformation; however, Morbius appears to be in control this time. Controlling bats may be a power of traditional vampires, but the Morbius of Marvel’s comic books can’t do it. It’s not entirely clear whether the Morbius version can, either, but it’s hard to imagine why else bats would circle around him in such numbers. Dr. Morbius knows a lot about vampire bats thanks to his research, so it’s not too far-fetched to think that with the help of a superhuman transformation, he’d learn how to communicate with them as well.

Morbius’ Other Powers In Marvel Comics

With all the MCU connections in Morbius, it’s no surprise the character holds fairly true to the comics. However, there are a few Morbius powers that don’t seem to have made the cut. Self-regeneration is one of Moribus’ comic book abilities, which goes hand-in-hand with his increased durability, stamina, strength, and speed. The ability to heal quickly is a classic vampire trait, and one that Morbius could incorporate easily given that the doctor will almost certainly end up in a situation where he’ll need to use it. Morbius can also spawn other pseudo-vampires via bite in the comics, which he doesn’t appear to do in the film.

Additionally, one of Morbius’ key comic book powers is hypnosis, which he’s able to use even on Spider-Man for short amounts of time. Depending on how Morbius fits into the MCU, this theory could be put to the test, but so far there’s no evidence that his hypnotic ability will be featured in Morbius. Including hypnosis would make a big difference, though. As is, the film primarily addresses the bodily changes Dr. Morbius undergoes, with powers like echolocation and gliding probably stemming from his physical transformation rather than psionic abilities. Giving Morbius hypnotic abilities in the film would shift its emphasis more towards the supernatural, and make Morbius even more of a power player when it comes time for him to meet other Spider-Man multiverse characters like Venom and the web-slinger himself. Regardless, all of Jared Leto’s powers in Morbius, whether based in the comics or not, are sure to make him a dangerous and interesting new addition to the growing Spider-Man multiverse.
