Jaws Iconic Youre Gonna Need A Bigger Boat Is A Sly InJoke

Chief Brody’s “You’re gonna need a bigger boat” is one of Jaws’ most iconic lines, which was a sly in-joke from the movie’s troubled production. Jaws was based on the bestselling novel by Peter Benchley, which revolved around the seaside resort of Amity having to deal with the arrival of a killer Great White Shark. Jaws was director Steven Spielberg’s third movie and it suffered through a infamously messy production, with issues such as filming on the water causing constant delays and the mechanical shark not working.

Inspite of the myriad problems Jaws would become a sensation upon release and is regarded as the first true summer blockbuster. From the fantastic performances to John William’s terrifying score and Spielberg’s taut direction, everything about Jaws just worked. It was such a success it led to 1978’s Jaws 2, which suffered through production issues of its own – including the original director being fired after a month of filming – but is generally well-regarded now. The same can’t be said for Jaws 3D or Jaws: The Revenge, which are considered two of the worst sequels ever made. While reports of a reboot pop up now and again, there hasn’t been a new Jaws movie since 1987.

The malfunctioning mechanical shark forced Spielberg to get creative, which included representing Jaws’ title character through his fin, yellow barrels or even John Williams’ main theme. It’s well over an hour into the movie that “Bruce” makes his first appearance, as Chief Brody (Roy Scheider) is angrily throwing chum from the back of the Orca. The shark pops up, momentarily stunning Brody into silence as he backs up to shark hunter Quint – who didn’t see the beast emerge – and tells him “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.”

This line has become one of Jaws’ most iconic, both for its dry delivery and for summing up any situation where most resources are needed. Jaws’ screenwriter Carl Gottlieb was present for most of the movie’s production and played the supporting part of Harry Meadows. In 2016, Gottlieb told THR that Scheider improvised the line, though it was based on a joke that had spread around the crew during filming. This was based on the producers buying a barge to hold all the production’s lights and equipment which was supported by a boat that was far too small for the job.

Despite this, Jaws’ producers refused to pay for a bigger boat despite crew protests, and quickly “bigger boat” became a joke on the set whenever things went wrong. Roy Scheider worked the line into the scene with Robert Shaw’s Quint, and the rest is movie history.
