Jennifer Lawrence Couldnt Stop Inhaling Her Nose Ring in Dont Look Up

Jennifer Lawrence reveals she couldn’t stop accidentally inhaling her character’s nose ring on the Don’t Look Up set. Directed by The Big Short and Anchorman director Adam McKay, Don’t Look Up follows Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio’s astronomers trying to warn the planet about a comet hurtling towards Earth that will surely destroy mankind. Acquired by Netflix, the movie was originally set for release in 2020, but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It will stream on Netflix on December 24, with a limited theatrical release set to begin on December 10.

Don’t Look Up continues McKay’s trend of politically-themed satires, following The Big Short and Vice, in which the director pulls together his comedic and dramatic skills. The movie also continues McKay’s trend of assembling a formidable cast. Alongside Lawrence and DiCaprio, his film has gathered together Meryl Streep – as the US President – Rob Morgan, Mark Rylance, Jonah Hill, Cate Blanchett, Timothée Chalamet, Ariana Grande, and Chris Evans. Earlier this week, Netflix released a new trailer and poster for the star-studded film.

Speaking with Vanity Fair, Lawrence breaks down the new Don’t Look Up trailer, explaining the film’s plot and sharing a few details from set. She speaks about how she researched by talking with a female astronomer and decided her character, Kate, would be “fierce,” which led to her wearing nose rings. While important for the character, they were a nuisance for Lawrence, as she explains that one nose ring was a magnet she “inhaled… many times” and had to “spit it out” in front of her co-star. In part of my research for the film, I spoke to a female astronomer. We kinda decided that Kate is the type to be fierce and ‘notice me, hear me roar, rat-tat-tat’ kind of lady. And the nose rings: one just kind of hangs in, one is a magnet. And many, many times I accidentally inhaled said magnet and had to spit it out in front of Leonardo DiCaprio.

Having taken a break from acting following 2019’s X-Men entry Dark Phoenix, Don’t Look Up marks Jennifer Lawrence’s return to the big – and small – screen. McKay wrote the role of the astronomer Kate with Lawrence in mind, which ultimately convinced the actress to sign on. DiCaprio came on board a few months later, after working with McKay to tweak the script. Lawrence was reported to have received a $25 million paycheck for accepting the role, making her well-compensated for her nose ring mishaps.

While Lawrence was no doubt irked by the frequent inhaling and spitting out of the magnet nose ring, this doesn’t seem to have negatively affected her time on set. McKay has described how, during the two-day improvised Oval Office scene between Streep, Hill, DiCaprio, Lawrence and Morgan, the cast could “not have been happier.” This isn’t too surprising for her fans, since the actor who famously slipped on the stairs while accepting her Best Actress Oscar at the 2013 Academy Awards, doesn’t seem to embarrass easily.
