Jennifer Lopezs Drug Lord Movie Eyes Rhythm Section Director

Jennifer Lopez’s upcoming movie The Godmother might have its director in The Rhythm Section’s Reed Morano. The box office and critical success of Hustlers has once again made Lopez someone people across Hollywood are anxious to work with. Amid awards buzz for her performance as Ramona, it didn’t take long for Lopez to reteam with STX Films on another true crime drama project. She boarded The Godmother last summer and has been attached to bring the story of Columbian drug lord Griselda Blanco to life ever since.

Now, The Godmother has taken a big step forward, as Variety reports STX Films is in negotiations with Reed Morano to direct the movie. Morano is fresh off directing Blake Lively’s action-thriller The Rhythm Section, but also won Emmy and Directors Guild awards for her direction on The Handmaid’s Tale. The addition of Morano comes with news that The Departed’s William Monahan will re-write the script. STX Films has yet to announce a release date for The Godmother.

Although The Rhythm Section received mixed reviews, Morano will get the chance to return to dramas with The Godmother but also experiment with a new genre and rich material. The story of Griselda Blanco has been waiting to be adapted to the big screen for years, with Catherine Zeta Jones attached to star at one point. Now, Lopez will be able to sink her teeth into a large role and persona, all while she also produces The Godmother along with Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, Benny Medina, and Julie Yorn.

The Godmother will follow the rise of Griselda Blanco from an impoverished childhood in Columbia to becoming one of the biggest drug lords on the globe, earning her The Godmother nickname. Blanco led the Medellín Cartel and played a big role in the Miami cocaine drug trades in the 1980s, as well as the Miami’s Cocaine Cowboy Wars. She was arrested in 1984 but continued to lead the cartel behind bars. Blanco was estimated to be worth nearly $2 billion when she died in 2012.
