Jessica Henwick Turned Down ShangChi Role For The Matrix 4

Star Jessica Henwick reveals she turned down a Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings role to join the cast of The Matrix Resurrections. Henwick joins an ensemble roster of newcomers for the sci-fi action franchise alongside Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Christina Ricci. The Matrix Resurrections will once again be led by Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss alongside returning franchise stars Jada Pinkett Smith, Daniel Bernhardt and Lambert Wilson.

The Matrix Resurrections is described as being set 20 years after the events of The Matrix Revolutions as Neo is back to reliving the seemingly ordinary life of Thomas A. Anderson in San Francisco under a prescription of blue pills. However, when Neo encounters Trinity, neither of whom recognize one another, it ignites something in the former that leads him down the path to reuniting with Morpheus and taking a red pill to reopen his mind to the truth behind The Matrix. Lana Wachowski returns to the helm of The Matrix Resurrections on a script she co-wrote with David Mitchell and Aleksandar Hemon.

As part of Entertainment Weekly’s cover story for the film, Henwick spoke about joining the ensemble roster of The Matrix Resurrections. In reflecting on the casting decision, Henwick revealed she turned down a Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings role to star in the sci-fi sequel, explaining that both Warner Bros. and Disney issued an ultimatum that the actress could only audition for one film, though neither role was guaranteed. Henwick described the tense situation as “a red-pill/blue-pill moment.”

Henwick’s reveal that she was offered a Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings role marks an interesting development for the Marvel Cinematic Universe film. The 29-year-old actress made her MCU debut with Netflix’s Iron Fist as Colleen Wong and with the release of the recent Phase Four movie, many have taken to making comparisons between the two martial arts heroes and speculating how the film could reintroduce any of the series’ characters following the cancellation of the Netflix shows. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings served as a reintroduction of a fellow MCU character, Tim Roth’s Abomination, following his debut in the oft-forgotten Incredible Hulk movie in 2008, the second overall film in the MCU.

It is disheartening to learn that Henwick was given an ultimatum by both studios that she could only audition for one film or the other and was forced to drop out from whichever she didn’t choose. Given the actress didn’t outright confirm in the interview she was being offered to return as Colleen for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, she could have very well been up for a different character as Michelle Yeoh landed her second MCU role in the film as the titular hero’s aunt and thus leaving the door open for Colleen to return elsewhere. In the meantime, audiences can look forward to seeing Henwick help reintroduce the world to the Matrix when The Matrix Resurrections hits theaters and HBO Max on December 22.
