John Boyega is a lawyer with a (non-laser) sword in a compelling new poster for the drama Naked Singularity. Now that Boyega has fulfilled his obligation to Disney and the Star Wars universe, the Finn actor is ready to move on with the rest of his career (and frankly he seems happy to be leaving the galaxy far, far away far, far behind).

For his auspicious first starring role post-Star Wars, Boyega has indeed come all the way back to Earth by lining up a drama film executive produced by Ridley Scott and directed by IT co-writer Chase Palmer (making his feature film helming debut). Based on a novel by Sergio De La Pava, Naked Singularity stars Boyega as a New York defense lawyer whose life begins unraveling after he loses his first big case. The film also stars Olivia Cooke, Bill Skarsgard, Ed Skrein, Linda Lavin, Tim Blake Nelson, Robert Bogue, Robert Christopher Riley and Liza Colon-Zayas.

Fans of Boyega are no doubt anxious to see what he does now that he’s set aside the trappings of sci-fi and taken on the lead in a dramatic role set on planet Earth. Though Naked Singularity does not yet have a release date or a trailer, it does have a new poster via Boyega’s own Instagram page. See the image in the space below:

The above poster comes on the heels of a previous Naked Singularity first look image, which features Boyega looking very nervous and sweaty in a courtroom, no doubt as part of the set-up to his sword-wielding unraveling. Boyega of course has tackled such Earth-bound drama before, appearing in Kathryn Bigelow’s gritty historical film Detroit as well as the Emma Watson techno-thriller The Circle. But he’s obviously most associated with science-fiction thanks to his work not only in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, but also in Pacific Rim: Uprising. Indeed, Boyega’s career got off to a very sci-fi start as his first major appearance was in the alien invasion cult film Attack the Block in 2011.

Given his remarks about how unsatisfying he found Finn’s arc in Star Wars to be, it’s probably no surprise that Boyega is not tackling another big franchise film for his next project, but is instead doing a gritty drama with no aliens or spaceships in sight. This new phase of Boyega’s career will be interesting to watch, as he begins to stretch his acting muscles in movies like Naked Singularity. Of course, there’s always the chance Boyega could return to franchise movies in the future, though given the way he’s burned his bridges it’s highly unlikely he would ever entertain the idea of playing Finn again, either on Disney+ or on the big screen.
