John Cenas Favorite Anime Is Very On Brand

John Cena’s favorite anime is Fist Of The North Star, which somehow just makes a lot of sense. John Cena is a wrestling legend, but it took some time for him to make the transition to movie star despite his popularity. He was a solid presence in fun but forgettable action flicks like The Marine or 12 Rounds, but neither really clicked with audiences. In the years that followed he mostly focused on his wrestling career alongside making occasional appearances in movies and TV shows like Psych.

Following an acclaimed supporting turn in the 2015 comedy Trainwreck, John Cena’s acting career is going from strength to strength. Comedy Blockers and Transformers spinoff Bumblebee were both well-received, and 2021 brought two of his most high-profile roles to date. He played Jakob, the villainous brother of Vin Diesel’s Dom in F9, and antihero Peacemaker in The Suicide Squad. He will also reprise the latter for his very own spinoff show from director James Gunn.

Cena is known to be something of a nerd himself in real life, with a fondness for video games and anime. He’s revealed in several interviews his favorite anime movie is Fist Of The North Star from 1986. This feature-length adventure is based on the manga of the same name, which is set in a post-apocalyptic world. The story followers wasteland wanderer Kenshiro, who battles the raiders and marauders with his special form of martial arts that can dispatch foes in all manner of gory ways.

The manga and anime took great inspiration from the likes of Mad Max and The Road Warrior, which can be seen in both the design of Kenshiro and the world itself. Cena revealed he saw the movie version as a teenager and was instantly taken by it and impressed by the Hokuto Shinken martial art and its often bloody results. While Cena is a follower of other anime like My Hero Academia, it feels very on-brand for the star to be such a big Fist Of The North Star fan, especially as he’s basically built like a real-life Kenshiro.

There was a 1995 live-action Fist Of The North Star from Hellraiser 2 director Tony Randal, which cast Gary Daniels as Kenshiro. While Daniels sculpted an impressive physique for the movie and it features a couple of good fights, it’s largely dismissed by fans for its many changes to the source and lacked the budget to really pull the idea off. No other Fist Of The North Star movie adaptations have been attempted, but the franchise has been kept alive with various video games and anime revivals. The 1986 movie is considered a good place to start for franchise newcomers, and it obviously gets an endorsement from John Cena too.
