John Walkers Captain America Fate Was Teased By Hulks First MCU Villain

John Walker’s new Captain America is already being set up as a bad super soldier thanks not to The Falcon & The Winter Soldier, but by The Incredible Hulk. That film – often overlooked as a “true” MCU chapter offers the answer to a key knowledge gap that foreshadows what Walker could become if he were to vainly take the serum. And it’s all thanks to Tim Roth’s Abomination.

The question of Walker’s MCU future is so far unclear even after three episodes of The Falcon & The Winter Soldier. Little of concrete note has been established about his true self away from his duties as the new Captain America, aside from flashes of volatility and a willingness to break rules to achieve the right outcome. In that latter respect, John Walker is arguably just like Steve Rogers, despite the criticism leveled at him by MCU fans. That he will follow in the footsteps of his unhinged comics counterpart seems inevitable, as he’s now foreshadowed doing “whatever it takes” but what that will mean in this universe is a little unclear.

But looking back to The Incredible Hulk offers some insight into why Walker’s potential transformation could be a disaster. In his military past and commitment to excellence in service, Emil Blonsky offers a dark parallel to Walker and the fact that it was the surviving super soldier serum he was given by General Ross that turned him into the Abomination before his access to Bruce Banner’s blood that’s most enlightening here. Because as with Steve Rogers, Blonsky’s inherent characteristics were amplified by the serum, offering a dangerous precedent that could see Walker’s worst attributes also exaggerated. In short, Walker is set up as a new type of Abomination.

Blonsky’s mutation into the final form of the Hulk’s nemesis – who will return in She-Hulk – always threatened to overshadow the importance of the first stage of his change. He was a sadistic, conniving soldier bred for war and victory at any cost, willing to tranquilize Banner’s dogs with apparent glee and the serum amped all of that up in him. It’s also important to acknowledge that Steve Rogers’ worst attributes were also amplified: he was stubborn and altruistic to the point of endangering himself, but they were characteristics identified by Dr. Erskine as making him fundamentally good. They paid off in the end through Bucky’s arc, because Steve stuck to his guns and endangered himself for the sake of his best friend, but whether someone else in his position would have done the same is debatable. His flaws reaffirmed his goodness, Blonsky’s confirmed his evil and so far, Walker looks more like the latter than the former.

For Walker, there is a similar drive to Blonsky’s and a similar past in the military that is yet to be fully explored. Sam Wilson’s part in The Falcon & The Winter Soldier should speak more loudly to the effects of war on a soldier, and it has to a certain extent (as has forgotten super soldier Isaiah Bradley’s), but Walker’s part in that dynamic is so far underdeveloped. But if the flashes of volatility and tendency to anger are anything to go by, Walker may have his own battle scars, which may be behind his drive to be “the perfect soldier” – in defiance of Dr. Erskine’s true agenda for Captain America. They may also be why the super soldier serum would turn him into a poisoned, wretched personification of the thing he wants most – victory “whatever it takes” – just as Blonsky did. And that would truly make him more like the Abomination than Captain America.
