John Wick Prequel Show Casts Young Winston

The John Wick prequel series, The Continental, has found its young Winston Scott. The Continental is the upscale hotel that caters to the criminal underworld in the John Wick films. It has been featured in all three Keanu Reeves-led action movies, serving as a safe haven with unique traditions and a strict code of conduct. The John Wick franchise has found its way to over $600 million worldwide, connecting with audiences who loved the slick, visceral action. Reeves is set to return for a fourth film that will continue to follow his titular protagonist.

The Continental is an event series consisting of three 90-minute episodes that will air on Starz and serve as a way to further expand on the success of the films. The first and third episodes will be directed by Albert Hughes, whose previous directorial efforts include The Book of Eli. Episode two is being helmed by Charlotte Brändström, who has a prolific resume directing for TV, with her next project being Amazon’s Lord of the Rings series. The series is set in 1975 New York, following a young Winston Scott who is forced to confront his dark past. Through Winston’s journey, audiences will see how he assumes control of the iconic Continental hotel while also learning his character’s backstory.

As reported by Deadline, Colin Woodell has been tapped to take on a younger version of Winston, a character originally played by Ian McShane in the John Wick films. Woodell’s resume includes Unfriended: Dark Web and The Call of the Wild with Harrison Ford. In addition, he has appeared on The Purge TV series, and most recently, he acted opposite Kaley Cuoco on The Flight Attendant. Woodell is also set to appear alongside Jake Gyllenhall in Michael Bay’s Ambulance.

Woodell’s casting comes on the heels of Mel Gibson joining the cast of The Continental. Not much is known about Gibson’s role aside from his character’s name, Cormac. However, given the nature of John Wick’s universe, he’s likely to play an element of the show’s underworld. Whether he’s a friend or foe to Woodell’s Winston remains to be seen.

Currently, Keanu Reeves is not set to appear in The Continental, which makes sense given the time period of the series. However, it’s a bit early to rule it out completely. Still, even with the show focusing on a younger Winston, Ian McShane has stated that he may provide some voice-over work, which could serve as narration if his character is reflecting on the past. Many details about the show are still under wraps, though it appears to be eyeing a 2022 premiere. Further information about The Continental will be forthcoming as the show develops.
