John Wick is a whip-smart, adrenaline-fueled franchise with no signs of slowing down. Each film in this Keanu Reeves trilogy has stand-out scenes.

Astoundingly, the filmmakers behind the John Wick franchise have yet to disappoint fans as they continually up the ante in each sequel. There’s no telling how many movies they’ll make before calling it a day. If Keanu Reeves can keep up with the intensive physical demands of the movies (and he’s certainly committed), then the saga could go on forever.

As it stands, the franchise consists of an awesome trilogy of action-packed thrill-rides. The fight choreographers keep topping themselves with increasingly inventive setups, visceral cinematography, practical stunt work, and higher stakes. Each movie in the franchise has its fair share of iconic moments.

9 John Wick: John’s Dog Is Killed

The inciting incident in John Wick is one of the most memorable in the history of action cinema, as the arrogant son of a Russian crime boss that John refused to sell his car to breaks into his house and kills his puppy, Daisy.

From that moment forward, the audience is totally on John’s side, supporting all the bloodshed that leads to avenging the dog’s death. In the original script, John’s whole family was killed, but killing the dog is undeniably more effective.

8 Chapter 2: John Retrieves His Stolen Car

One of the loose ends left behind from the first John Wick movie was that, while John managed to avenge the death of his dog, he didn’t manage to get his stolen Mustang back.

That’s where the opening scene of the first sequel comes in, as John races around New York to retrieve his car. He gets it back, albeit heavily damaged, following an intense scuffle with Abram Tarasov’s legion of henchmen.

7 Parabellum: Antique Weapon Store Fight

As John’s excommunicado takes effect in the opening moments of Parabellum, a band of assassins chase him into an antique weapon store, where weapons from medieval and frontier times are encased in glass.

What follows is a blood-soaked, realistically messy battle in which knives go into eyeballs and axes go into skulls.

6 John Wick: The Nightclub Shootout

Before setting out on the bloody road to avenge the death of his dog, John checks in to New York’s Continental hotel and speaks to the owner, who tells him that Viggo has his son, Iosef, surrounded by bodyguards at his nightclub, the Red Circle (a nod to the Melville crime movie, a big influence on John Wick).

So John heads down to the club for possibly the most captivating action sequence in the movie. The fight choreography is intense, the gun fu moves at a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it pace, and the long takes add a level of startling realism that’s missing from a lot of action movie shootouts.

5 Chapter 2: Hall Of Mirrors

To complement Chad Stahelski’s spectacular direction of action scenes, screenwriter Derek Kolstad thinks of fascinating places to set those scenes. In the second movie, John takes on a handful of killers in a hall of mirrors.

It would’ve been silly to send John to a carnival to get him into this setting, but Kolstad found a way to make it work by pushing John into New York’s “Reflections of the Soul” exhibit.

4 Parabellum: The Horse/Motorcycle Chase

Since the beginning, the John Wick franchise has been heavily influenced by the Western genre, and in Parabellum, the title character actually rode a horse through the streets of New York, pursued by assassins on motorcycles.

This is a prime example of the threequel upping the ante from its previous two installments, and one of the most inventive set pieces in recent action cinema.

3 John Wick: John Kills Iosef

The whole of John Wick builds up to the titular assassin shooting Iosef dead for the murder of his adorable puppy. John kills a lot of other people along the way, and almost gets himself killed a couple of times.

When John finally corners Iosef at a safe house and takes out all the bodyguards protecting him, he shoots Iosef in the face without a second’s hesitation. It’s not a glorious triumph; it’s hilariously easy, and devilishly anticlimactic.

2 Chapter 2: The Cliffhanger Ending

The first sequel to John Wick set a precedent for the franchise that each movie would end with a jaw-dropping cliffhanger to keep the audience hanging in suspense until the next one, in true serial fashion.

The cliffhanger at the end of John Wick: Chapter 2 was a doozy, as killing Santino on Continental grounds results in an excommunicado and a global $14 million contract on John’s head. John hurries off to an unknown fate as every assassin in the world becomes interested in killing him.

1 Parabellum: Defending The Continental

Winston evacuates all the guests from the Continental and takes John and Charon to the hotel’s weapons stash as the High Table sends its top-ranking goon squad to kill them.

It was great to finally see Charon in action as he and John made short work of the heavily armed badasses sent to vanquish them.
