He might have become a somewhat controversial figure in recent years, but you can’t deny that Johnny Depp has had an interesting career. From his first role as a teen being torn limb from limb in A Nightmare On Elm Street, right up to his recent resurgence as Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them series, he has managed to stay strangely relevant for almost forty years.

We’ve used IMDB to rank the five best films in which Depp plays an important part, and we’ve chucked in his five worst for good measure.

10 Best: Donnie Brasco (7.7)

Starring alongside the inimitable Al Pacino, it’s relatively rare for Depp to be in a position where his performance is likely to be second best. However, he manages to equal the iconic actor like it’s barely even an effort.

He takes on the titular role of Donnie Brasco, a jewel thief who is quickly revealed to be an undercover FBI agent named Joseph D. Pistone. He pulls off both sides of the character with impressive ease, proving that he was able to give a convincingly serious performance, leaving the surreal quality of his past work behind.

9 Worst: Mortdecai (5.5)

Doubling as the producer of the action-comedy Mortdecai obviously wasn’t quite the right move for Depp. The film acquired some exceptionally negative reviews across the board, citing everything from a poor storyline to terrible acting. It also managed to lose $13 million at the box office, despite having the very impressive trio of Depp, Gwyneth Paltrow and Ewan McGregor on its side. Some even considered it the worst film of 2015. Rough.

8 Best: Ed Wood (7.8)

A somewhat overlooked film in Depp’s catalog, Ed Wood marked only the second collaboration between Depp and Tim Burton. It tells the story of the titular filmmaker, who brought various controversial cult-classics to the cinema, including Plan 9 From Outer Space and a series of 1970s pornographic movies.

Depp takes on the lead role, and explains how he borrowed acting techniques from an eclectic mix: Mickey Rooney, Ronald Reagan, Casey Kasem, and Jack Haley’s Tin Man from The Wizard Of Oz. A strange mix, but we’ll assume he knew what he was doing.

7 Worst: The Astronaut’s Wife (5.4)

Johnny Depp His 5 Best & 5 Worst Roles (According To IMDB)

The relatively big-budget sci-fi film The Astronaut’s Wife was expected to do big things in cinemas. Fresh off of Donnie Brasco and Edward Scissorhands, Depp was well-known and sitting in an exciting lead role opposite Charlize Theron. He played an astronaut who recently returned to earth after an explosion in space, but the story turns down a strange, contrived route that seems a waste of the central actors’ talents. The film was a massive box office bomb and was panned critically.

6 Best: What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (7.8)

Johnny Depp His 5 Best & 5 Worst Roles (According To IMDB)

Back in 1993, a fresh-faced Johnny Depp was playing the role of Gilbert Grape, caring for his obese mother (played by Darlene Cates) and mentally impaired brother (a young Leonardo DiCaprio). While it was DiCaprio who ended up with his first Academy Award nomination for his role in the film, Depp’s performance is still exemplary.

Despite being another in Depp’s long list of box office bombs, this was one with an impressive critical response. As such, it ended up becoming a well-loved classic in retrospect, while underappreciated in its time.

5 Worst: Private Resort (5.3)

Johnny Depp His 5 Best & 5 Worst Roles (According To IMDB)

In his second role ever and first starring role, Depp played Jack Marshall in this strange, low-budget comedy. It is the third in a series of teen-centric, sex-heavy comedies made by producer R. Ben Efraim, with the previous two installments being Private Lessons and Private School. The general premise of the film is that Jack and Ben (Rob Morrow) are looking for girls to sleep with while in Miami, as a jewel thief operates around them. Just from that very brief summary, you can probably tell it was never destined for greatness.

4 Best: Edward Scissorhands (7.9)

Arguably the role that gave Depp his huge break into the world of acting and allowed him to forge a career full of appearances in many rather incredible films. Tim Burton’s Edward Scissorhands is a remarkable example of how surrealism and fantasy can combine convincingly with romance.

Depp plays an unfinished man who, you guessed it, is called Edward. Only kidding, yes, he has scissors instead of hands. Rather than the very dark, scary path the film could have gone down, the end result is a remarkably touching (though not literally; scissors for hands, remember) story of the love between Depp and Winona Ryder’s characters.

3 Worst: Sherlock Gnomes (5.1)

Johnny Depp His 5 Best & 5 Worst Roles (According To IMDB)

It seems almost offensive that such a feel-good, funny film as Sherlock Gnomes would be ranked just 5.1 by IMDB, but there you have it. Joining a cast full of incredible English talent (literally everyone from James McAvoy to Michael Caine, Maggie Smith to Stephen Merchant, Ozzy Osbourne to Ashley Jensen) Depp chucks his trademark London voice to play Sherlock Gnomes. Considering the story is a strange blend of Romeo And Juliet and Sherlock Holmes, the film does seem a little… odd.

2 Best: Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl (8.0)

Johnny Depp His 5 Best & 5 Worst Roles (According To IMDB)

As one might expect, Johnny Depp’s most loved, most iconic and most profitable role remains his portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise. Considering the huge series came from nothing more than a ride at Disneyland, its success is astonishing.

The films may well take some serious downturns in quality over time, but there is no denying that Depp’s performance in the original 2003 feature combines comedy, action, and sincerity like no one else ever could.

1 Worst: Yoga Hosers (4.3)

This is another one of those films where you can just tell it isn’t going to be a world-dominating piece of quality cinema. Yoga Hosers sees Depp play the character of Guy LaPointe in Kevin Smith’s abysmal horror-comedy. Interestingly, the lead roles are played by Smith and Depp’s daughters, turning the existence of this critically panned film into a family affair.
