Johnny Depps Into The Woods Wolf Villain Explained

Johnny Depp is no stranger to villainous characters, and he added yet another to his résumé playing Into The Woods’ Big Bad Wolf – here’s his lupine antagonist explained. Directed by Chicago helmer Rob Marshall, Into The Woods is a 2014 Disney fantasy film based on the Broadway musical of the same name by the late, great composer Stephen Sondheim. The movie musical brings together a star-studded cast that (alongside Johnny Depp) features talents like Meryl Streep, Anna Kendrick and Chris Pine and was a box office smash that scored three Academy Award nominations.

Like the musical it’s based on, Into The Woods incorporates characters and story elements from several classic fairy tales like Jack And The Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood and Cinderella. It tells the tale of a Baker (James Corden) and his wife (Emily Blunt) who desperately want a child but can’t conceive because of an infertility curse placed upon them by a vengeful Witch (Meryl Streep). The Witch agrees to lift the curse but only if the Baker and his wife retrieve four items she needs for a potion to restore her former beauty, each relating to the four classic fairy tales mentioned previously: a white cow, a red cape, a yellow hair and a golden slipper.

Trying to locate a red cape for the Witch naturally brings the Baker into the path of Little Red Riding Hood (Lilla Crawford) who – like her fairy tale counterpart – has a run-in with the Big Bad Wolf while traveling through the woods to visit her grandmother (Annette Crosbie). Into The Woods’ Wolf is played by Johnny Depp and his predatory character stays true to form by gobbling up the girl’s grandmother, donning her clothes to impersonate her and swallowing Little Red Riding Hood whole too.

Johnny Depp’s Into The Woods’ character Big Bad Wolf looks a little different from the villain that usually comes to mind when audiences think of the Little Red Riding Hood fairy tale. That’s because Depp worked closely with costume designer Colleen Atwood to craft a very distinct character. According to a Huffington Post interview with Atwood, Depp took inspiration from a lascivious version of the Big Bad Wolf created in the 1930s by Warner Bros and MGM animator Tex Avery that was often seen sporting a zoot suit and fedora. Depp aimed to visually communicate the fact his Into The Woods villain was a wolf in sheep’s clothing – or in this case a wolf in dandy’s clothing.

However, Johnny Depp’s Into The Woods Wolf costume wasn’t a hit with everybody. Some felt it jarred stylistically with the more fairytale-like costumes featured in the film, while others thought the costume made the Big Bad Wolf look like a pimp and gave his scenes with Little Red Riding Hood an overly predatory quality. In Depp and Atwood’s defense, his wardrobe is much more subtle than the Wolf in the original Into The Woods Broadway musical who often appeared on stage pants-less. Taking that into consideration, Johnny Depp’s Into The Woods Wolf costume could’ve been much worse.
