Koichi grew a lot throughout Diamond Is Unbreakable. But while he impresses in some ways, he’s disappointing in others.

Koichi Hirose is one of strongest supporting characters and closest friends of Josuke Higashikata in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure part 4, Diamond Is Unbreakable. His youthful spirit, unassuming personality, and overall kindness proves a stark foil to Okuyasu’s blitheness.

There are many excellent things about Hirose which render him not only a good companion for Josuke, though also a powerful ally. Nonetheless, he is a flawed character and is in some ways underwhelming. To appraise Koichi’s worth to its fullest, we examine both positive and negative moments and facets of the character to discern whether or not he is worthy of Higashikata’s friendship.

10 Great – Stopping Heart Attack

After Shigechi’s death, Koichi and Jotaro went to a tailoring shop to investigate the button he found. Surprisingly, they would inevitably come across Yoshikage Kira, who dispatched his “Heart Attack” to slay them ~ an indestructible force of nature which not even Star Platinum could destroy.

However, because Koichi was able to use Reverb Act 3 on it, the tank was pinned to the ground, forcing Kira to show himself. Though he would require Josuke and Okuyasu’s aid to win the battle, Hirose was nonetheless instrumental in uncovering the psychopath’s identity.

9 Disappointing – Kidnapped By Terunosuke

Terunosuke’s Stand, “Enigma,” was able to entrap his enemies within paper after displaying two body language signs of fear (the first for the user to detect and the second to confirm). He would use it to capture Josuke’s mother before their encounter so that he could strike terror into his heart.

However, she wasn’t his only victim. The paper mastering villain also captured Koichi off screen with evidently little difficulty. Because of Hirose’s debilitating defeat, he was able to scare Josuke into thinking he might be dead and capture him in the process.

8 Great – Saving His Family

Tamami’s Stand allows him to fix locks to the chests of those who feel bad for him. Though this may not seem like a huge asset, it is especially effective against compassionate people (and even worked once before against Okuyasu).

He was able to entrap the Hirose family and attempt to extort them for their home and possessions. However, since Koichi was able to use Reverb Act 1 on his mother in the nick of time, he convinced her of his innocence and ousted Tamami for the fraud he was.

7 Disappointing – Almost Ruining Giorno’s Trial

Giorno’s efforts to become a mafioso were to prevent the sale of drugs to children. The test he was given by Polpo was to keep a flame lit for twenty four hours. Since Koichi understandably still sought out the belongings the man stole (specifically his passport), he would end up sneaking into his room.

This nearly resulted in the extinguishment of the candle and jeopardized Giorno’s test. Should Koichi have been successful, it would have made it impossible for Giovanna to fight the corruption within the mafia.

6 Great – Helping Reimi Sugimoto

Reimi Sugimoto was the first victim to be claimed by Yoshikage Kira. She was a ghost that haunted an ally alongside her dog, whose throat had been gruesomely slit.

When Koichi and Rohan Kishibe came across her, the latter was much more keen on leaving than helping to avenge her death. However, upon Hirose’s convincing, the two set upon a journey which would ultimately bring the villain to justice. When Kira perished, he would face his victim for a final time before being banished to an eternity of well earned suffering.

5 Disappointing – Run-In With Rohan

Rohan Kishibe may have proved to be a useful asset in Kira’s downfall, but he started out arguably as more of a twisted sociopath than the latter was. When he came across Koichi, he found his life so fascinated that he began tearing open his “pages,” knowing full well this would result in a loss of body weight and vitality.

Moreover, Hirose was programmed to return to Kishibe’s house every afternoon, having completely forgotten the atrocities of the day before. This would eventually arouse the suspicion of Josuke and Okuyasu, who almost became Rohan’s next victims for the peril Koichi involved them in.

4 Great – Stopping Kira’s Deadly Queen

When Yoshikage Kira was cornered and injured, he had a final gambit to procure his freedom. He would use his Stand’s ability on an innocent bystander to provide his means of escape.

However, before he could press down on it (as Deadly Queen requires a manual detonation), Koichi used his Reverb Act 3 to increase the gravity around his hand and render it completely useless. This was such an impressive feat that it even garnered the admiration of Jotaro Kujo himself.

3 Disappointing – Captured By Keicho

When Josuke and Koichi came upon Okuyasu’s house, he was shot in the throat by Keicho, who was seeking to create more Stand users in hopes of killing his own father. As his younger brother provided a distraction, the man dragged Hirose’s bleeding form into the upper room to determine whether or not he would become a user.

This forced Higashikata into another perilous situation on his friend’s behalf. Were it not for Okuyasu’s voluntary assistance with “the Hand,” he would have had to enter a space which was an obvious trap and feel the full wrath of Keicho’s “Worst Company.”

2 Great – Saving Yukako’s Identity

When Yukako was unable to abide by the conditions surrounding Aya Tsuji’s Stand, Cinderella, her face began to crack and come apart. Though she was warned about this earlier, she would visit her wrath on its user to little avail.

Koichi was suspicious about Yukako’s odd demeanor and came to visit Aya’s parlor. He was forced with the choice of which face she should wear, and because of the devotion he displayed to his companion, she was restored despite the fact that his answer was incorrect.

1 Disappointing – Relationship With Yukako

The relationship between Koichi and Yukako is as alarming as it is disturbing. She was willing to go to any lengths to procure his love and “success,” including kidnapping him, torturing him, and feeding him things unintended for consumption.

Though he was able to escape and spared her life, the woman’s obsession would not cease after her first failure. Yukako was even willing to consult the mysterious powers of a Stand user to force Hirose to love her ~ between the dramatic change of disposition from their previous interactions to those they had after, this was a successful ploy.
