When Joker was released in movie theatres back in 2019, it was the most talked-about movie for months, broke box-office records, and completely changed the audience’s perception of the DC Extended Universe. And two years later, fans are still trying to break down the film’s meaning and what was and wasn’t real.

But at the same time, there are still a lot of Reddit users who don’t think it’s the perfect art-house superhero movie that most people make it out to be. Between accusing it of stealing too much from other movies, arguing that it shouldn’t even be connected to Batman, and complaining Arthur Fleck wasn’t funny enough, Reddit is full of hot takes about the low-budget phenomenon.

10 It Has Too Many Subplots

In what is a fairly overly critical review of the movie, one Redditor argues that there are too many subplots, noting that it takes so long for Arthur to transition into the clown prince of crime.

They argue that the movie doesn’t answer any of the heavy questions it poses and that there are simply too many things going on. To the user’s credit, there are a couple of narratives that lead nowhere, such as what was going on with the super rats, and what happened to Sophie. And though so much of the film is open to interpretation, there a few things that fans are still asking.

9 It’s A Carbon Copy Of Older Scorsese Movies

Joker is inspired by many decades-old movies, and the end result is an incredible amalgam of some of the greatest films of all time, whether it’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Serpico, or Fight Club.

But more than anything, fans were quick to latch on to the fact that Joker bears an uncanny resemblance to the Martin Scorsese movies Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy. Some Redditors think it’s too much like a carbon copy of the movies, and though it could be considered an unofficial remake, it certainly doesn’t make the film any less interesting as the user states. They go on to say that Taxi Driver isn’t even that good of a movie, which is a whole hot take in itself.

8 It Didn’t Need To Be A Batman Movie

Though killing Bruce’s parents again is something the movie got wrong, as that moment has been documented so many times on the big screen, the movie was a great addition to the Batman universe. And though the Joker’s origins have never really been told so in-depth before, which is what adds to the mystery of the character, it was an origin story fans didn’t know they needed.

However, a select few believe that it didn’t need to actually be a Batman movie. They claim that any references to the Wayne family, the Joker, or Gotham wasn’t necessary in the slightest and that it was manipulative. But if it wasn’t a Batman movie, then it would have been even more similar to the decades-old Scorsese movies, which is something that it has also been criticized for.

7 Batman Should Have Been In It

On the complete flip side of certain fans not wanting it to be remotely related to Batman, others believe that the world’s greatest detective should have been in it. Using the negative reception of Venom to back up their argument, the user posits that there can’t be the Joker without Batman, just like there can’t be Venom without Spider-Man.

But if the caped crusader was included in the movie, there would have simply been too much going on. However, the introduction of Batman is something that could be explored in the sequel.

6 It Didn’t Feel Like The Joker

A combination of things added up to Arthur Fleck just not feeling like the Joker in one user’s eyes, and they felt like the face paint especially seemed ridiculous. But though it doesn’t look like any previous depiction of the Joker, there wouldn’t be any point in different depictions of the character if they all looked and acted the same.

And though the user admits that looks aren’t everything, they argue that Phoenix’s performance didn’t make up for it at all. However, given how the performance is frighteningly real and that it redefined who the Joker is, it’s the actor’s best role.

5 There Shouldn’t Be A Sequel

After the huge success of the movie both critically and commercially, it’s no surprise that Warner Bros. wants to develop a sequel. And when it comes to a follow-up, there are many possibilities as to where it could go, whether it’s focusing on Arthur becoming the head of his own cult, introducing Batman, or expanding on the world of villains.

Out of thousands of standalone movies, Joker is one that deserves a sequel the most. But after calling the movie bland, one Redditor argues that there shouldn’t be a sequel to the movie. They even go on to compare the movie to Avengers: Endgame, which is like comparing apples to oranges.

4 The Fact The He Wasn’t Funny Was A Cardinal Sin

With every terrorist-like act the Joker has committed in all of the movies, there has always been at least a little bit of underlying humor in everything he does. Whether it’s graffitiing all over an art museum in Batman or the way in which he messed with Two Face in the hospital in The Dark Knight, there’s always been a bit of absurdity that comes with all of the torment.

However, that wasn’t exactly the case in Joker, and one user believes it was a “cardinal sin” that Arthur Fleck wasn’t funny. They argue that Fleck should have been funny in the dark bizarre way that the character is generally known for.

3 It Was A Good Movie, But A Bad Origin Movie

Though there are some who complain about the movie being bland or straight-up bad, this user gives credit where credit is due and calls it a great movie. However, they also say that it’s a bad origin movie because the links to the Batman franchise and the character of the Joker seemed forced.

They continue by explaining that they don’t believe that Arthur Fleck would ever take pleasure in foiling Batman. But as the movie simply follows Arthur during a few short days of his life, there’s so much more that could happen to him that would make him act in such a way.

2 There Is No Structure

In the movie, one bad thing after the next happens to Arthur, which eventually leads to him breaking down and turning into the sinister clown by the end of the movie.

And this Redditor posits that that structure is terrible, or more specifically, that there is no structure. They argue that after both Arthur and the audience find out that he was imagining being with Sophie, it makes no difference to the narrative whatsoever.

1 They Unjustly Turned Thomas Wayne Into A Bad Guy

Batman movies don’t always stay so faithful to the source material, and even movies in the MCU take extreme liberties with the comic books, but this user won’t stand for it when it comes to Thomas Wayne.

Joker portrays the billionaire as an evil narcissist, but in the comic books, he was an empathetic philanthropist. However, if there are any group of characters that can be tweaked and manipulated by the writer at hand, it’s the characters from the Batman franchise, as they can be all interpreted in many different ways. Even the titular character of the movie has been dramatically changed, never mind a minor character like Thomas Wayne.
