Warning! Spoilers for The Joker 2021 Annual

The Joker is getting the gritty ’70s crime movie treatment from artist Francesco Francavilla in the upcoming comic, The Joker 2021 Annual. The artist known for such comics as Afterlife With Archie, among several DC and Marvel titles, has a distinct style that is unlike anything else in the medium.

While Jim Gordon is at the start of his career at the Gotham City Police Department, he is running into all kinds of trouble. Dealing with his marriage issues at home, and facing a new bat vigilante in Batgirl, he is now tasked with handling the city’s most infamous criminal: the Joker. Before he became the commissioner, Gordon struggled to find his footing. Similar to his story in Batman: Year One, the future companion to the Dark Knight continues to be drowning in his responsibilities to the city. The Joker is making it impossible for Gordon to protect Gotham without the help of Batgirl in the upcoming issue, written by James Tynion IV and Matthew Rosenberg.

Featuring art by Francesco Francavilla, The Joker 2021 Annual brings a gritty ’70s crime movie aesthetic to Gotham City. As told through the eyes of Jim Gordon, the issue seems to be putting the citizens before the superheroes. Even Batgirl is at the beginning of her superhero career, trying to figure out how to navigate life as Gordon’s daughter and save the city. The return to simpler times in Gotham will appeal to nostalgic fans, remembering Frank Miller’s take in Year One. Francavilla’s artistic style conveys a similar sense of the romantic but grounded, dark nature of the city, making it feel like a lived-in place.

Instead of the bat heroes taking center stage, Francavilla illustrates a younger, understanding Gordon who attempts to deescalate a tense situation. While other police are quick to use force, Jim slows down to ask questions. The orange tones of the Gotham sun create a feeling of a tired afternoon, in which law enforcers are willing to bend rules, as Jim is bent on keeping them.

Although Gotham can feel one dimensional in some depictions, as a cartoon backdrop to Batman’s rogue gallery, this version resembles the gritty aesthetic of New York City in the ’70s. Desperate for a win, Gordon operates in the confines of a department that is willing to compromise how they function. Exemplifying his characteristic integrity, Gordon shows Bullock and his fellow officers a better way to represent GCPD. The Joker 2021 Annual releases on Tuesday, November 30.
