Joker Meets Teen Titans Go! in Awesome Cover Art

The Joker is meeting Teen Titans Go! in an upcoming variant cover for The Joker 2021 Annual. Dan Hipp’s style is most often attributed to the character designs of the rebranded Teen Titans, and is a great match for the clown prince’s eccentric personality.

The upcoming issue returns to an earlier time in Commissioner James Gordon’s career with the GCPD. Simultaneously dealing with marital issues, corruption within his department, and the latest vigilante Batgirl, Jim is now faced with the Joker’s havoc in Gotham. The annual issue is written by James Tynion IV and Matthew Rosenberg with art by Francesco Francavilla. While the story itself takes on a grittier 70s’ crime movie vibe, Hipp’s variant brings a vibrant sense of life to the issue.

The variant cover for the The Joker 2021 Annual illustrated by Dan Hipp features the Joker in a knitted turtleneck sweater, holding a cup of tea as an homage to the Mad Hatter. On the Joker’s sweater are a variety of pins of Batman’s friends and foes, including Red Hood, Commissioner Gordon, Nightwing, Two-Face, Harley Quinn, and a few others. Wearing his maniacal smile and staring at the reader, the Joker is practically breaking the fourth wall.

As Francavilla’s interior art showcases a dark, urban city, Hipp’s variant cover proves how open Batman’s most beloved villain is to interpretation. Whether he’s the center of a mature story following Gordon’s early days, or the antagonist in one of Batman’s adventures, the Joker transcends any one demographic. Although the Joker written by James Tynion IV and Matthew Rosenberg in the issue appears to take things less seriously than other iterations, Hipp’s take calls back to his Teen Titans Go! iteration of characters. The pins he wears depicting various characters from the DC Universe also look as if they were plucked from the show.

However, the pins also seem to homage specific versions of each character, which is what Teen Titans Go! character designs often did as well. The version of Jim Gordon on Joker’s sweater, along with Two-Face, closely resemble their interpretations from Batman: The Animated Series, while Deathstroke homages Slade from Teen Titans, and Harley Quinn references her modern canon style. Hipp’s variant cover is practically a love letter to Gotham City and its villains, with Joker depicted as Batman’s greatest enemy. Dan Hipp’s Joker cover will be available when The Joker 2021 Annual releases on Tuesday, November 30.
