Jude Law Joins Blake Lively In Spy Thriller The Rhythm Section

It has just been confirmed Jude Law is currently in talks to star alongside Blake Lively in the spy-thriller, The Rhythm Section. The movie will be a modern adaptation of Mark Burnell’s first Stephanie Patrick novel of the same title. Lively is set to play the title character, who loses her family in a plane crash. Later, she unearths that the crash was by design and not an accident. This kicks the story into full gear, as Stephanie goes on a journey to uncover the truth by taking on the mantle of an assassin to track down those responsible and bring them to justice.

Law is set to have a very full plate over the next couple of years, as he’s attached to several films at the moment. He just wrapped his role as a young Albus Dumbledore in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2, and is in the midst of filming an untitled Woody Allen project. There has also been talk he could reprise Dr. John Watson in a third Sherlock Holmes film, but development on that has been slow. Though he’s keeping busy, Law has some free time in his schedule and is now eyeing a role in the upcoming spy flick.

According to THR, Law is in talks with EON Productions to co-star alongside Lively in the film. The Rhythm Section is set to be helmed by Reed Morano, who just won an Emmy for Outstanding Director for a Drama Series on The Handmaid’s Tale. This film is set to be produced by longtime James Bond veterans Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli. No screenwriter has been brought onboard yet, but with The Rhythm Section making steady progress, that should change soon.

While there isn’t official confirmation as of now as to whether or not Law has placed his signature on the dotted lines, his addition would certainly add excitement to an already formidable team of cast and crew. Law has been a Hollywood mainstay since the early ’90s and has made a name for himself as one of Hollywood’s most reliable supporting actors. While his recent films have largely been hit or miss, Law, for the most part, picks his project very wisely. In addition to Sherlock Holmes, some of his most noteworthy films include Steven Spielberg’s A.I. Artificial Intelligence and Martin Scorsese’s The Aviator. Law has also been nominated for two Oscars in his career. While Lively’s filmography isn’t quite as prolific as her would-be co-star, she has demonstrated much talent over the years in films like The Town and The Shallows. It’ll be fun to see what Law and Lively can do together.

EON has mentioned they are open to hiring a female director for the James Bond series, so it’ll be fascinating to see how their partnership with Morano goes. If things on this spy thriller turn out well, the filmmaker can perhaps find herself in the driver’s seat for a future 007 installment. In the meantime, here’s to hoping The Rhythm Section adds to the growing list of female-led action movies that have been released over the past handful of years as Hollywood continues to move forward in a progressive direction.
