A new trailer to promote the release of the next Junji Ito horror manga collection just dropped, and it’s chock-full of the nightmarish imagery that has made him a legend in both horror and manga spheres.

While Junji Ito is largely known for his longer works like Uzumaki (getting an anime adaptation in 2022) and Tomie, he’s also been prolific when it comes to one-shots and shorter stories. This has often presented something of a problem for his most dedicated fans in the West, as many of the shorts have never before seen official English release, or have been out of print for some time. Some of his shorter works, like The Enigma of Amigara Fault, managed to proliferate online through fan translations, spreading awareness of Ito’s work well beyond Japan in the early 2000’s. Now, those fans will finally have a chance to see how the master got his start.

The collection, entitled Deserter, is made up of Ito’s early works, from the days when he first began making a name for himself. It marks the third Junji Ito release from Viz Media in 2021, following on from the Lovesickness collection which saw release in August and his newest story Sensor, a Lovecraft-inspired cosmic horror which was released in April. Deserter collects a dozen stories together – on par with previous anthology collections of Ito’s work. The collection takes its title from the short “A Deserter in the House,” wherein a family takes in a soldier who deserted in the midst of World War 2, but continue to convince him that the war’s still going long after it ends. In a new trailer released to YouTube by Viz Media, fans are treated to thirty seconds of back-to-back nightmare fuel, demonstrating the terrifying and unexpected imagery that has made Ito such a giant in his field.

A row of dessicated bodies, vampiric violinists hungry for blood, a promised Dreamworld, and a grotesque arm tease some of Deserter’s stories. It’s clear that despite being from Ito’s early work, these stories won’t be pulling any punches, bringing horror fans a plethora of new and terrifying content to binge. The debut of the Uzumaki anime adaptation is likely to draw in a new generation of Western fans who might otherwise be unfamiliar with Junji Ito, so having these short story collections available will make it easy for them to get a feel for the entire range that Ito’s works can occupy.

Junji Ito’s Deserter will be released on December 21, 2021 from Viz Media, available in both hardcover and digital formats.
