In celebration of the upcoming Jurassic World: Dominion, a group of YouTubers returned to the original Jurassic Park in an attempt to recreate its T-Rex VFX with up-to-date software. Jurassic Park was released on June 11, 1993 and featured a star-studded cast, including Jeff Goldblum, Laura Dern, Sam Neill, Bob Peck, Richard Attenborough, and Samuel L. Jackson. Over time since its release, the film has become a cult classic and gained notoriety for its use of such realistic practical effects, especially for its time.

The film follows Neill and Dern’s characters, paleontologists Dr. Alan Grant and Dr. Ellie Sattler, respectively, as they become part of a chosen group to be given a tour of a newly unveiled theme park filled with dinosaurs. The dinosaurs themselves are part of a research project, being scientifically resurrected through the use of prehistoric DNA. The group soon learns how dangerous the prehistoric creatures truly are after an escape takes place, forcing them to fight for their lives and escape.

The YouTube channel, Corridor Crew, which specializes in developing and studying VFX work, recently uploaded a video in which they attempted to recreate the practical effects previously utilized in the 1993 classic. Within the video, the team creates a completely CGI shot based on the film, including a completely CGI T-Rex. After the shot is finished, it is compared to the film’s more practical effects for its dinosaurs, allowing viewers to determine for themselves if modern VFX would work for the film if it was made today. The video can be viewed below:

The VFX used throughout the Jurassic Park franchise has regularly been a topic of discussion throughout the years amongst audiences, specifically the more recent film, Jurassic World, and its leniency towards utilizing more CGI shots. While the original film only had about 6 minutes of CGI shots, majorly using animatronics for their various monsters, Jurassic World is mostly made up of CGI dinosaurs and environments. Upon its release, this was a downfall for a portion of fans as one of the original’s most famous aspects was its ground-breaking use of practical effects.

While the shot created in the video is completely stunning and impressive for a single group of individuals to create, it also goes to show how much better and more visually appealing it is for films to utilize practical effects over the use of CGI. With many fans of the franchise also agreeing with this sentiment, both on this video and in reviews of Jurassic World, the hopes for the next film in the franchise to bring back the use of practical effects are higher than ever. In anticipation of the next film, the original Jurassic Park is available for audiences to stream on Peacock, HBO Max, and Netflix.
