The Jurassic World franchise has subverted the expectations of longtime fans by accomplishing feats only dreamed of in the Jurassic Park trilogy. First, the series created a functioning park, then it destroyed the island and took the dinosaurs to the mainland. Next, audiences will have to witness an Earth in which dinosaurs and humans must coexist, in 2022’s Jurassic World: Dominion. However, as the newly released prologue demonstrates, the sequel can’t avoid references to where it all started.
The teaser begins with a collection of scenes from 65 million years ago, when dinosaurs ruled the Earth. The prehistoric prologue concludes with the defeat of the T-Rex at the jaws of the Giganotosaurus, a series newcomer. But where one T-Rex falls, another rises, and the prologue transitions to the present day, with the original T-Rex from 1993’s Jurassic Park on the run from humans.
During her pursuit, she races through a packed drive-in theater; at first, only a few moviegoers notice the approaching dinosaur, but chaos breaks out as the T-Rex attempts to make sense of her surroundings. However, as she makes her escape, she can’t help but make the same choices she did in Jurassic Park.
Although brief, the nods to the original film are difficult to miss. One example is when the T-Rex tips over a car with a couple inside, and then kicks it. That, of course, is a direct reference to the dinosaur’s first appearance, when she tips over the SUV containing Lex and Tim. Following both flips, the T-Rex also lets out a roar, as if to indicate she has dominated what she thinks is prey.
The next nod is when the T-Rex makes her escape from the drive-in. As she walks out, she stomps on the ground, leaving behind a footprint; that same iconic impression served in the original film as a warning of her return. It has also become a signature for the dinosaur, as it represents power.
While Jurassic World: Dominion serves to cap off the new trilogy, it also acknowledges the legacy the series has created. The film’s prologue, while brief, offers a great look at the chaos the T-Rex and other dinosaurs will bring. But by including the callbacks to the 1993 original, it also reassures fans that, while the circumstances are different, the essence of what makes the franchise iconic remains intact.
Jurassic World: Dominion hits theaters June 10, 2022.
