A fake Justice League Snyder Cut release announcement fooled a lot of fans on April Fool’s Day. Original director Zack Snyder’s version of the Warner Bros. and DC Films project continues to be a favorite topic of conversation for the public despite it being a couple of years since the movie hit theaters. Proof of that is how a recently fake advertisement about its rolled out quickly garnered the interest of a lot of people.

Justice League’s production was a tumultuous one with a last-minute director switch between Snyder and Joss Whedon, who manned extensive reshoots and post-production. This resulted in Snyder’s original plan being substantially changed. That quickly became apparent when the film released, paving the way for the Release the Snyder Cut movement. The campaign is calling for Warner Bros. to release the original cut of the movie of Snyder’s vision and Junkie XL’s (the original composer before Danny Elfman stepped in) intended musical score. Over the years, the petition has earned backing from a lot of prominent personalities, including several cast members including Ben Affleck and Gal Gadot.

As part of the yearly pranking tradition on April Fool’s day, an HBO Max parody account came up with a tweet that jokingly announced the release of Justice League’s Snyder Cut. The post is complete with a poster, coupled with an official-looking caption. Check it out below:

You asked for it and we listened. We’re releasing the Zack Snyder’s Justice League as a launch title for #HBOMax on May 2020. 214 minutes in 4K resolution. He will rise. #ReleaseTheSnyderCut pic.twitter.com/oIKzi6o15Q

The image used in the tweet is BossLogic’s Justice League Snyder Cut poster. It’s unknown if he has anything to do with the prank, however. It features the main heroes of Justice League complete with black suit Superman (Henry Cavill) – a moment from the movie that was cut in its theatrical version. It also has Green Lantern and Martian Manhunter. Admittedly, the post looked legit at face value, but one peek at the comments section and there, people warn others that it’s nothing but a joke. Even MCU star Kumail Nanjiani pointed out that the Twitter account has a very small following, which is telling about the authenticity of this announcement. Meanwhile, others who were fooled couldn’t help but express their disappointment upon learning that it’s nothing but an April Fool’s gag.

If anything, the enthusiastic response to this prank further validates the idea that supporters of the campaign remain hopeful Warner Bros. will ultimately heed their demands, especially with Snyder’s backing. At this point, the studio remains mum about the matter, but it doesn’t seem like the movement is going anywhere. In fact, another reason this joke has fooled a lot of people is because it’s a logical move for them to release the Snyder Cut on HBO Max to lure more people to sign up for the upcoming streaming platform. Whether or not this is a possibility that the company’s executives are seriously discussing is unknown, but given the continued clamor for this version of Justice League, it’s almost impossible to think that they’re not even considering it.
