Justice League Knightmare Batman & Joker Tease Explained By Comics

The return of Ben Affleck’s Batman and Jared Leto’s Joker in the Knightmare future of Zack Snyder’s Justice League seems to be based on the comics – more specifically, on Grant Morrison’s Batman R.I.P. Zack Snyder’s Justice League promises to be more than an extended materialization of the director’s original vision. The addition of Darkseid, Deathstroke, and Jared Leto’s Joker proves that the 2021 HBO Max release will tie up various plotlines from the original plans for the DCEU, and new photos suggest it will be more comic-accurate than expected.

Batman R.I.P. follows an overconfident Bruce Wayne who’s tormented by the Black Glove, a villain organization that infiltrates Bruce Wayne’s intimate life to destroy Batman from within. The Black Glove is led by Dr. William Hurt, the mastermind who eventually succeeds in “killing” Batman without having to literally end his life. This storyline takes place during the events of Final Crisis, the event where “the day evil won” and Darkseid (apparently) kills Batman.

Ben Affleck and Jared Leto reportedly shot around five minutes of new footage for Zack Snyder’s Justice League, and new images shared by the director reveal that these scenes take place in the Knightmare future. The images hint at a meeting between Batman and a disheveled Joker in a prison cell or a dungeon, with the latter presenting the hero with a bloodstained Joker card. This closely resembles the opening of Batman R.I.P., where Joker teases Batman by dealing him a “Dead Man’s Hand.” Despite Batman’s cunning, Joker challenges Batman intellectually by foreshadowing his demise in an ambiguous way, which the Clown Prince of Crime, at this moment, assumes will come from the hands of William Hurt and the Black Glove. What neither of them knows is that this prophecy is eventually fulfilled by Darkseid, who defeats Batman with his Omega Sanction in Final Crisis.

Although Batman’s death in Final Crisis is actually an accidental trip back through time, Joker’s scene in Zack Snyder’s Justice League seems to set up the real death of the Caped Crusader. The appearance of Batman and Joker in the Knightmare future could happen before Superman kills Batman as seen in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Joker might be dealing Batman the Dead Man’s Hand as a warning that Superman will kill him. But if the scene takes place in an alternate Knightmare timeline, the misdirection from Batman R.I.P. could be translated into Joker teasing Batman about Superman without knowing that Darkseid will be the one to kill him, mirroring Batman’s sacrifice in Final Crisis.

Batman won’t hesitate to sacrifice himself to save Lois Lane, who has become the only person who could save Superman from succumbing to Darkseid’s Anti-Life Equation. Where exactly Joker’s appearance takes place and how it fits in the rest of the movie will only be revealed when Zack Snyder’s Justice League releases on HBO Max. But if the similarities between the Batman R.I.P. and the Knightmare images weren’t enough, the blood spot on Joker’s card offers the perfect opportunity for Zack Snyder to reference the Comedian’s smiley face from his own 2009 adaptation of Watchmen.
